Para Summary / Summary Questions

Para Summary questions (also called Summary or Gist) present a short paragraph and ask for the best summary from 4 options. CAT has included these consistently.

Frequency (CAT 2017–2024):

• CAT 2017–2018: 3 summary questions per slot
• CAT 2019: 2 questions per slot
• CAT 2020: Likely 2 questions
• CAT 2021: 3 questions (MCQs, one of the few MCQs in VA)
• CAT 2022: 3 questions
• CAT 2023: Possibly 2 questions (slightly reduced due to paracompletion and odd-one-out)

Key Insights:

• Typically MCQ format and considered moderate difficulty; options are close in meaning.
• Tests critical reading and the ability to identify the main point of a passage.
• Stable part of VARC: every paper from 2017–2024 had at least 2 summary questions.
• Expect 2–3 summary questions per CAT.
