You solve a percentage question in a mock, land on 130 percent, and for a second you just sit with it. The steps feel fine while you are doing them. Nothing beeps. It's only when you go to fill in the answer that the number itself stops you: nothing about students can be 130 percent of the whole class.

This is a different check that happens to share a similar name. It has nothing to do with units. Instead, it looks at whether the value itself, whatever it measures, could possibly be true.
Every CAT Quant question comes with built-in limits, whether it says so directly or not. A percentage lives between 0 and 100. A probability lives between 0 and 1. A count of people has to land on a whole number.
Break one of these limits, and you already know something went wrong, before you even look at the arithmetic.
That's the whole idea behind the Final Inspection: three quick checks that catch a broken answer right at the finish line, seconds before you'd otherwise commit to it.

The Final Inspection is a checklist, not a sequence. You don't have to run the three checks in order, and most questions only need one of them to catch a problem. Together, they cover the different ways a wrong Quant answer tends to show its hand.

- Would It Still Hold in the Extreme Case? Testing the answer against an obvious edge case the question implies, which a genuinely wrong answer often fails immediately.
None of these checks ask you to redo the algebra. Each one asks something smaller and faster: could this even be true, given what the question already told you? That's what makes the Final Inspection fast enough to run on every single answer, not just the ones that already feel shaky.
Running It on a Real Question
Take a set-overlap question, the kind CAT loves: in a class, 60 percent of students passed Math, 70 percent passed Science, and every student passed at least one of the two subjects. What percentage passed both?
The standard approach is the union rule: the two percentages together, minus the overlap, should equal 100. So the overlap is 60 plus 70 minus 100, which comes out to 30 percent.
Skip that last subtraction under time pressure, though, and you land right back at the 130 percent from the opening story. It's an easy trap: add 60 and 70, feel done, move on.
Run the first check before you even revisit the formula: does 130 percent fit the container? A percentage of students, out of the whole class, cannot go past 100, so 130 is out no matter how it was calculated. The mistake isn't a decimal point somewhere. It's that the number itself was never a legal answer.
The second check works well on counting questions, where off-by-one slips are common. How many multiples of 7 lie between 1 and 100? Dividing gives 14.28, which some aspirants round up to 15. Check the nearby value first: 15 times 7 is 105, past 100. Fourteen survives, fifteen doesn't.
The third check is fastest on formula-based questions. Take two taps filling a tank together, and test the extreme case where one tap's rate is zero. The combined-time formula should reduce to the other tap's time alone. If it doesn't, the formula itself has an error.
