Exam Updates

IIM Calcutta has published the selection criteria for its MBA 2027-29 batch, which uses CAT 2026 scores. The structure has three layers: a minimum percentile cutoff, a composite that decides who is called for the interview and writing test, and a final composite that decides who is admitted. Each layer has its own weights.

This guide lays out the reported numbers, with their sources, and states clearly what changed from the previous cycle. The figures come from Careers360 (8 and 9 October 2026) and Cracku, not from the institute own brochure, which we did not open in this session. The institute can amend its policy at any time, so use this as a reading aid and confirm on the official site.

Because the shortlist composite uses your CAT score and marks, it helps to have a target range in mind, so try the CAT percentile predictor when you plan.

Key Takeaways
  • The reported process has three layers: minimum percentile cutoffs, an 85 point shortlist composite and a 100 point final composite.
  • In the final composite, CAT carries 30 points, the personal interview 48, the writing test 8, academic diversity 6 and work experience 8.
  • Cracku reports the framework as essentially unchanged from 2026-28, with the CAT year and the work experience cutoff date updated.
  • The stage I percentile minimums are qualifying floors, and the institute notes that actual cutoffs can be much higher.
  • Confirm every number on the official IIM Calcutta brochure before you act.

What Was Published and Where It Comes From

Careers360 reported on 8 and 9 October 2026 that IIM Calcutta had released its MBA admission policy for 2027-29, and Cracku published a comparison with the previous cycle. The reports agree on the structure and the weights.

Eligibility, as reported, is a bachelor degree with at least 50 percent marks or equivalent CGPA, and 45 percent for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Foreign degrees need an equivalence certificate, and the percentage is calculated by the awarding institution method, or by dividing CGPA by the maximum CGPA where no conversion exists.

The institute reserves the right to amend the admission policy, which means a report can go out of date. The brochure on the institute site is the source that decides.

Layer One: Minimum CAT Percentiles

To be considered, candidates must meet the reported minimum percentile in each section and overall, and have non negative raw scores in all sections. The table shows the reported minimums for 2027-29. Cracku says these are unchanged, though the report gives no earlier numbers to check, and the institute notes that actual cutoffs may be much higher depending on how many candidates are called in each category.

These are qualifying minimums and not predictions of a call. A candidate who meets them is in the pool and is then ranked on the composite. How high the composite cutoff goes depends on the pool, and the institute sets category wise composite cutoffs.

The sectional minimums matter. A strong overall percentile with a weak section can fall below a sectional floor. Plan your section wise preparation with this in mind, and see our guide to CAT 2026 cutoffs across institutes for context on how cutoffs compare.

Common Mistake

Reading a minimum percentile as the percentile at which calls go out. The reported floors are the entry points to the pool. The composite and the batch size decide who is called, and the institute says actual cutoffs can be much higher than the minimums.

Layer Two: The 85 Point Shortlist Composite

Candidates who clear the minimums are ranked on a composite out of 85 points to decide who is called for the interview and the writing test. CAT carries 56 points, calculated as the candidate total scaled score divided by the maximum possible, times 56. Class 10 carries 10 points, Class 12 carries 15, and gender diversity carries 4 for female and transgender candidates.

Notice that the CAT input here is a score based formula, as reported, and not a percentile one. That differs from the approach reported for some other institutes, so do not carry assumptions across. Check which input each institute uses.

Class 10 and Class 12 marks convert to points by slabs. For Class 10, 80 percent and above earns 10 points, with 8 for 75 to under 80, 6 for 70 to under 75, 4 for 65 to under 70, 2 for 60 to under 65, and none below 60. For Class 12, the top slab earns 15 points, then 12, 9, 6, 3 and none. The percentage is calculated on the aggregate of all subjects on the mark sheet, whether or not the board counts them.

Layer Three: The 100 Point Final Composite

After the interview and the writing test, the final composite out of 100 decides admission. CAT carries 30 points, the personal interview 48, the writing ability test 8, academic diversity 6 and work experience 8. The institute then prepares category wise merit lists from this composite.

The interview is the largest single component at 48 points. That is almost half the final composite. The same applicant who is average on paper can move by many places on an excellent interview, and a strong profile can fall on a poor one. This is the clearest reason to begin interview practice early.

The number of candidates shortlisted for the interview depends on the batch size and is at the sole discretion of the institute. Meeting a cutoff does not guarantee a call.

The Three Layer Check

  1. Check your section and overall percentiles against the minimum table.
  2. Compute your shortlist composite from your expected CAT score and your Class 10 and 12 marks.
  3. Plan your interview and writing preparation as the largest share of the final composite.

Academic Diversity and Work Experience

Academic diversity carries 6 points in the final composite. The reported table assigns points by academic background. A bachelor degree in engineering earns 0. A non engineering bachelor degree earns 4. A dual bachelor degree in law earns 5. Candidates with a chartered accountancy, cost accountancy or company secretary qualification, with a bachelor degree, are reported to earn 6.

Some entries need a mark sheet uploaded with the interview application, and others are awarded to final year students on a certificate from the principal or registrar dated on or before 30 June 2027. Read the exact rules in the brochure for your case.

Work experience carries 8 points. The reported cutoff date for counting experience moves from 31 January 2026 to 31 January 2027, according to Cracku. The formula for converting months to points was in a section we could not see, so check the brochure. Our guide on how much work experience adds in IIM selection gives general context.

CAT Shortcut
  1. Write your academic background against the diversity table and note the points.
  2. Count your work experience in months up to the reported cutoff date.
  3. Keep your mark sheets and certificates in one folder for the interview application.

A Worked Example of the Shortlist Composite

Take a hypothetical candidate, not a real person, whose scaled CAT score is 80 percent of the maximum possible. The CAT part is 0.80 times 56, which is 44.8 points. The candidate has 78 percent in Class 10, which falls in the 75 to under 80 slab and earns 8 points. Class 12 is 72 percent, which falls in the 70 to under 75 slab and earns 9 points. If the candidate is female, add 4 points for gender diversity.

The total is 44.8 plus 8 plus 9 plus 4, which is 65.8 out of 85. For a male candidate with the same numbers, the total is 61.8. This is an illustration of the arithmetic only. It does not say whether 65.8 is enough for a call, since that depends on the category wise composite cutoff that the institute sets after the results.

The example shows two useful things. First, the Class 10 and 12 slabs are coarse: a candidate at 79 percent and one at 75 percent earn the same Class 10 points. Second, the CAT part moves in fine steps, so a few extra marks in CAT can matter more than a few percent in the earlier marks. Note also that the CAT share here is a ratio of scores, and the exact scaled maximum is for the institute to define.

What Changed From Last Year

According to Cracku, the 2027-29 framework is essentially unchanged from 2026-28. The weights in the shortlist composite and the final composite are the same: 56, 10, 15 and 4 in the first, and 30, 48, 8, 6 and 8 in the second. The reported changes are the CAT year, from CAT 2025 to CAT 2026, and the work experience cutoff date, from 31 January 2026 to 31 January 2027.

Careers360 does not compare with the previous cycle, so the comparison rests on the Cracku report. If you rely on it, check the previous brochure alongside the new one. The stage I minimums are described as unchanged, and no earlier numbers were given to verify against.

The practical meaning is that preparation for IIM Calcutta need not change because of the new policy. The weight on the interview, the shortlisting on CAT score and school marks, and the role of diversity points continue as before, as reported.

Exam Tip

Compute your Class 10 and Class 12 points now, using the reported slabs, and add the diversity points that apply to you. Knowing 20 or so points of your shortlist composite in advance tells you how much your CAT score has to carry.

Mentor Insight

Applicants who spend all their effort on CAT score often under prepare the part of the composite that carries the most weight. Interview preparation costs time, but it is the largest single component in the final composite, as reported.
