Each of these three CAT quant shortcuts depends on one condition holding true a condition few aspirants ever stop to check.

Before trusting a calculation shortcut do name the one condition that it silently assumes then check whether this specific question actually gives you that condition.

  • Name the assumption. Every shortcut saves time by skipping a step, Right? ask what was that step checking for.
  • Check the question, not the pattern. A question can look identical to ten you've solved correctly and still have removed the condition that made the shortcut valid.
  • Cost the check, not the shortcut. The check itself takes two or three seconds. That's the real trade not "shortcut vs full method."

Shortcut #1: The Successive change shortcut

This is one of the first shortcuts most aspirants learn for successive discounts or growth which includes adding the two percentages. A 10% cut followed by another 10% cut feels like a 20% total cut. It isn't.

Take a jacket priced at Rs 2,000 with two successive discounts of 10% each 

Now the Shortcut instinct: 20% off, final price Rs 1,600.

While the Real math: 2,000 x 0.90 = 1,800 then 1,800 x 0.90 = 1,620 so effective discount of 19% not 20% because the second 10%is calculated on the reduced price.

Add a third 10% discount and the shortcut would suggest 30% off but the real answer is 27.1%.

CAT Shortcut
The shortcut isn't wrong it is incomplete in comparison to the full version: net change = a + b + (ab / 100), with negative values for decreases for two successive 10% discounts: -10 + (-10) + 1 = -19%.

Shortcut #2: The Average-of-Averages shortcut

The second shortcut shows up whenever a question gives two averages and asks for a combined one. Section A calculates average as 60 marks while Section B  calculates average as 80. 

When the average of the two numbers is calculated we get 70. 

That's only correct if both sections have equal students and CAT questions rarely mention that because it's rarely true.

Say , Section A has 30 students averaging 60, Section B has 20 averaging 80. The shortcut gives a combined average of 70. The real one uses total marks over total students: (30 x 60) + (20 x 80) = 3,400, divided by 50 which equals to 68.

The 2-marks difference is exactly the size of the gap a CAT question uses to separate the popular wrong answer from the correct one. The bigger the gap between group sizes, the more the true average gets pulled toward the larger group not the midpoint.

Exam Tip
Before averaging two averages, glance for any mention of group size, students, days, kilometers or units. If the question names two different quantities near the averages, weight before you average. If it genuinely doesn't, equal groups, stated or clearly implied the simple average is fine.

Shortcut #3: The Split-Factor divisibility shortcut

The third shortcut lives in number-theory questions in order to check the divisibility by a composite like 24, split it into two smaller factors and test each. Test by 4, test by 6 if both pass so the shortcut concludes it's cleanly divisible by 24. It's genuinely useful, with one requirement most aspirants never learned: the two factors have to be co-prime, sharing no common factor of their own.

Take 36. Is it divisible by 24? Split 24 into 4 and 6 : 36 divided by 4 is 9, by 6 is 6, both clean, so the shortcut says yes. 

It isn't: 36 divided by 24 is 1.5. 

It fails because 4 and 6 share a common factor of 2, so passing both only confirms divisibility by their least common multiple, 12, not their product, 24. Split 24 into 8 and 3 instead, which share nothing and 36 divided by 8 correctly leaves a remainder.

Quick Check
Before splitting a composite number to test divisibility ask one question: do my two chosen factors share a common factor with each other? If they don't like 8 and 3 the shortcut is safe. If they do like 4 and 6, pick a different pair first.

How to catch yourself before the marks are gone ?

None of this means slowing down. It means one habit that costs almost nothing: before committing to a shortcut's answer, name its condition and check whether this question actually gives it to you.

Successive change needs a fixed base , the average-of-averages needs equal groups and the Split-factor divisibility needs co-prime factors.
