Why Do CAT Algebra Questions Cost You So Much Time?
Algebra questions rarely test whether you know a formula. They test whether you can translate a word problem into the fewest possible equations before you start solving.
Picture a word problem: ages, mixtures, or work rates across three or four related quantities. Assign a fresh variable to every one and you're solving three simultaneous equations for something that only needed one, mathematically correct but three times slower.
Assigning a separate variable to every quantity: "let the father's age be x, the son's age be y, the age five years ago be z," when two of those three are just expressions of the first.
The Two-Minute Setup Rule: A Worked Example
Pause before you write any equation. Spend up to two minutes deciding which quantity becomes your variable, the smallest or simplest one, and write every other quantity in terms of it.
The question: Three friends, A, B, and C, together have 90 marbles. B has twice as many as A, and C has 10 more than B. How many does each person have?
Messy setup: Let A = x, B = y, C = z. Three unknowns to juggle: x + y + z = 90, y = 2x, z = y + 10. Solvable, but every substitution is another place to slip.
Clean setup: B and C are already described in terms of A, so let A = x. Then B = 2x and C = 2x + 10. One equation: x + 2x + 2x + 10 = 90, giving x = 16.
A = 16, B = 32, C = 42. Same numbers, same logic, one equation instead of three.

Every algebra question on CAT rewards the same two-minute habit. Choose the simplest quantity as your variable, express everything else through it, then solve. That's usually the difference between a two-line solution and a five-line one full of avoidable slips.
