A useful deduction should change something elsewhere in the grid it should force a new value, eliminate a genuine possibility or give you an obvious next move. If nothing else changes, you may have found information but that doesn't mean that you have made progress.

You know the feeling when five or six minutes into a DILR set & nothing seems to click then comes one clue that finally makes sense, you place a value, eliminate an option and suddenly think...Okay, this is it now the set is opening up.

  • The Repeat Check. After applying it, is your next move obvious or are you back to scanning the grid for something else to try?

What a false breakthrough looks like?

Suppose a set links five analysts to five cities and five joining months. You figured out that Ananya cannot be in February that's great but if February was already ruled out for Ananya by another clue you have changed nothing.

Now suppose your deduction proves that Ananya must be in Mumbai that immediately eliminates Mumbai for four other analysts and may trigger another placement. Now that's a real breakthrough.

It's a habit built through timed practice: after every important deduction, check whether it created a new possibility, eliminated one or gave you a clear next move.

None of this needs to slow you down the Forcing test should take only a few seconds once you've practised it.

You should make it a reflex: the moment you make an important deduction, ask what it changed elsewhere. Did it force something? Eliminate something? Give you an obvious next move?

If yes, keep going. If not, don't keep building deductions on top of it go back and look for the next useful clue.

Sometimes the test will tell you that nothing has really changed that's useful information too. If the set is genuinely stuck you can now make a deliberate choice: push on, park it for later or move to another set.

The important part is that you're making that decision based on evidence, not because one filled cell made the set feel easier.
