CAT 2026 Timeline Decoded

The official CAT 2026 timeline is short. Registration opened on 3 August 2026 and closes on 15 September. Admit cards come out on 4 November. The exam is on Sunday, 29 November 2026, in three slots.

Four dates, and most aspirants can recite them by mid-August. Which is exactly why they are not the dates that decide anything. Nobody misses the CAT exam date. What people miss are the deadlines nobody publishes: the point after which a weak section can no longer be fixed, the last week a new topic is worth starting, the day your mock cadence should have changed.

A timeline ribbon with five pins looks like five equally important moments. In practice one or two of them govern everything, and the loud ones are rarely the ones that bind.

The Official CAT 2026 Schedule

Worth having in one place, because the rest of this piece is about what it does not tell you. IIM Indore is conducting CAT 2026.

A few more published details worth having in one place:

• Fee: ₹2,700 for General, EWS and NC-OBC candidates; ₹1,350 for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
• Test cities: roughly 170 across India, with your preferences collected in the application form.
• Eligibility: a bachelor's degree with 50 percent, or 45 percent for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
• Final-year students are eligible, as are holders of professional degrees such as CA, CS and CMA.
• No age limit, and the score stays valid for roughly a year after declaration.
• Twenty-one IIMs use the score, alongside a large number of non-IIM institutes.

Results are expected in late December 2026 or early January 2027, and the exact declaration date has not historically been announced far in advance.

The Real Timeline: Three Kinds of Date

Treating all dates as equivalent is what produces a calendar full of reminders and no actual structure.

Hard deadlines need about twenty minutes of attention in total across four months:

• Register early rather than on 15 September. The portal is busiest at the close and mistakes are made in a hurry.
• Check name, category and photograph against your documents once, carefully.
• Note that the fee differs by category and that final-year students are eligible.

Soft milestones matter for logistics rather than for preparation:

• The admit card on 4 November tells you your slot, and slots are not chosen by you.
• An early-morning slot changes how the final fortnight should be spent, which is only knowable from 4 November.
• Test city allocation affects travel, and travel affects the two days before the exam.

Derived deadlines are where the preparation actually lives:

• The last date a new topic is worth starting, because it needs time to become reliable.
• The date after which content work should stop and simulation should take over.
• The date your mock cadence should tighten to weekly, and then to exam-time weekly.
• The date you stop trying to fix a weak section and start hedging it instead.

Deriving Your Own Deadlines From 29 November

These are the ones worth putting in a calendar, and they follow from how long different kinds of change take to land.

The second row is the one most aspirants resist. Six weeks out, a concept you have just met will not be reliable by exam day, and the hours spent acquiring it would have produced more as simulation and review.

What the Admit Card on 4 November Actually Changes

It is treated as a formality and it carries two pieces of information that should change your final month:

• Your slot. Three sessions run on 29 November: 08:30, 12:30 and 16:30. Which one you get is not your choice.
• Practise at your slot time. An 08:30 exam and a 16:30 exam demand very different sleep, food and warm-up routines.
• Your test city. Travel time on the morning of the exam is a real variable, and so is the night before.
• Roughly three and a half weeks remain after the admit card, which is exactly enough to adapt a routine and not enough to rebuild one.
• Everything else on the admit card is administrative. Read it once and stop.

Common Mistakes With the CAT Calendar

Related errors:

• Registering on the last day. Rushing a form under portal load, when it could have been done in August.
• Ignoring the slot. Discovering an 08:30 exam on 4 November and never adjusting the routine.
• Starting new topics in November. Acquiring content that cannot become reliable before 29 November.
• Keeping a fortnightly mock cadence into November. Too few full simulations in the window where they matter most.
• Planning forwards from today. Rather than backwards from 29 November, which produces a completely different allocation.

A Drill for Building Your Real Timeline

Twenty minutes, once, and it produces the calendar the official schedule does not.

1. Write 29 November 2026 at the right-hand end of a line and today at the left.
2. Mark the two hard deadlines and the admit card date. That is the published cycle, and it takes ten seconds.
3. Now work backwards: six weeks before the exam, four weeks, two weeks. Write what changes at each point.
4. Give each of those a real date and a decision. Put them in the same calendar as the official ones.

What usually becomes obvious:

• The window for starting anything new is shorter than it feels, and it closes in October.
• There are only about four weekends available for full mocks at exam time.
• Most of the published calendar requires almost no preparation time at all.
• The gap between now and mid-October is where the outcome is decided, and it has no official dates in it.

The Bottom Line

IIM Indore has published five dates and none of them will be the reason anyone underperforms. The dates that matter are unpublished, unenforced and derived by working backwards from 29 November. Writing them down is a twenty-minute task that most aspirants never do, and it is the difference between four months of effort and four months of sequence.
