You open the DILR section, scan all four sets in under a minute and pick the one that looks shortest.
Now 90 seconds in, you realize the "short" set is actually the hardest thing in the paper: five variables, half never stated outright, two arrangements that both look valid until you're three clues deep.
Length tells you almost nothing about how hard a set actually is.
What decides difficulty is structural: how many variables you're holding in your head, whether constraints are handed to you or built by combining two lines and whether there's one clean path to the answer or several that collapse into one.

Why CAT LRDI difficulty has nothing to do with set type?
Ask ten CAT aspirants which DILR set type is hardest and you'll get ten different answers, seating arrangement for some, caselets for others.
That's the tell: difficulty isn't a property of the topic, it's a property of the specific set in front of you. It's also the most common mistake test takers make, writing off caselets or seating arrangement as "just hard for me," when really it's too many inferred constraints showing up more in one format than another.
Fix the actual skill, not the label.
A seating arrangement set with four people and two explicit clues is easier than a caselet with seven data points and constraints you infer by cross-referencing two sentences.
Call it a bar graph instead and the difficulty barely moves: what made it hard was never the topic, it was how much you held in your head at once and how much of the logic you had to build yourself.

The Difficulty Signature: three traits that decide the tier
Every LRDI set, regardless of type, carries a difficulty signature, three independent traits you can read at a glance, before you solve anything.
- Variable count. How many entities, attributes, or categories are you tracking at once? Four people, one attribute, is light. Six people across three attributes is heavy, before you've read a single constraint.
- Constraint visibility. Is each rule stated outright ("A sits left of B"), or do you combine two lines into one usable fact? Explicit constraints are a straight read. Inferred ones cost extra time before you've placed anything.
- Deduction path. One clean sequence of moves to the answer, or do multiple valid arrangements survive until a late clue eliminates all but one? A single path forgives a slow start. A branching path punishes any early wrong turn.
None of these traits decides difficulty alone: six variables with one clean deduction path is just slower to write down, while four variables with two branching possibilities can eat ten minutes on something that looked simple. Fifteen seconds is usually enough: count the entities, skim for a percentage buried mid-sentence (a common sign of an inferred constraint), and you already know roughly which tier you're in.

Here's what each tier actually looks like under time pressure, with one original example per tier (none of these are from an official CAT paper; they're built to show the pattern).
An easy-tier set gives you a small, closed world and clean rules from the first line: you place every entity through direct elimination, no need to test scenarios on scratch paper.
Take four vendors, Rima, Suresh, Aman, and Neha, assigned to stalls 1 to 4. Rima is in stall 1, Suresh sits immediately right of Aman, and Neha isn't in stall 4: three explicit clues, one pass, and Neha lands in stall 2. If a set gives you this shape early, solve it first and bank the marks fast.
Most LRDI sets in an actual CAT paper sit in the moderate tier: a couple more variables than easy, or the same count but one constraint you build yourself instead of reading it outright.
A tea stall selling masala, ginger, and plain tea makes the point: masala sales were thrice plain, ginger was 15 more than plain, and all three totaled 205 cups.
Set plain as your variable and it falls out in sequence (plain is 38, ginger is 53), no real inference needed. What pushes this into moderate is holding three relationships in your head at once, and a six-minute solve here doesn't always mean the set was hard: time yourself on sets you've already solved correctly and check whether the slowness came from genuine branching or just unfamiliar bookkeeping.
Hard-tier sets share one signature trait: more than one arrangement stays valid longer than you'd like.
Take four analysts, Meera, Nikhil, Owen, and Priya, each covering a different sector: IT, banking, pharma, and retail. Nikhil covers banking, the retail analyst sits in cabin 1 of a four-cabin row, Owen sits next to the pharma analyst, and Meera isn't in cabin 1 or cabin 4.
Work through those clues and IT still won't pin down: Owen could be IT or retail, and if he's retail, either Meera or Priya could be IT too. Three live possibilities survive from one clean-looking set of clues, that's why hard sets are dangerous: you can do everything right and still not land an answer.
Spot the branching early and you've got three honest options: track both possibilities on paper, look for a question that needs only a partial answer, or skip the set and bank the time elsewhere. Don't discover it four minutes in and keep going out of sunk-cost stubbornness.
