How to choose between CAT 2026 and GMAT 2026 based on your target college, not the exam itself
There's no single right answer between CAT and GMAT. The honest answer depends on which colleges are actually on your list.
IIMs admit almost entirely through CAT. ISB accepts both. Most MBA programs outside India ask for GMAT instead.

Why "Which Exam Is Harder" Is the Wrong Question
Ask ten CAT aspirants whether GMAT is easier, and you'll get ten confident, contradictory answers. That's because difficulty isn't the right way to think about this. CAT and GMAT test different things, on different timelines, for largely different colleges. Comparing them like two versions of the same test misses the real decision in front of you.
The real question has nothing to do with which exam plays to your strengths. It comes down to which exam your target colleges actually want. A strong GMAT score does nothing for you at a school that doesn't accept it, no matter how well you scored.

Whose List Is Your Target College Actually On?
Here's a simple way to think about it: picture two separate guest lists, a CAT list and a GMAT list, and check which one your actual target colleges are on. We call this the Guest List Method. Don't pick the exam you like more. Check whose list has your college on it.
The Guest List Method
- The CAT List: 20-plus IIMs and 1,200-plus other Indian B-schools that admit primarily or exclusively through CAT.
- The GMAT List: ISB, most one-year and executive IIM programs, and most MBA programs outside India. All of these accept GMAT. Several also take CAT, alongside GMAT, not instead of it.
- Reading Your Own List First: write down your actual five to eight target schools before picking an exam. Then check which exam, or both, actually gets you into that room. Don't choose the exam first and hope your schools happen to fit.
How CAT 2026 and GMAT 2026 Actually Differ
Format is where the two exams genuinely differ, not just in difficulty. GMAT Focus Edition runs three equally weighted sections, Quant, Verbal, and Data Insights, at 45 minutes each. That's 2 hours 15 minutes total, scored on a 205 to 805 scale. CAT is a single fixed test held once a year, and CAT 2026 is scheduled for November 29, 2026.

Does ISB Hyderabad Really Require GMAT?
No, and this is the most common misconception in this whole decision. ISB Hyderabad accepts CAT, GMAT, and GRE scores, with no stated preference between them. Ruling out ISB because you're prepping for CAT means ruling out a school that never asked you to choose.
The IIMs primarily admit through CAT. Several also accept GMAT scores, for specific one-year and executive programs like PGPX and EPGP, and for some seats reserved for international candidates. The core two-year IIM programs remain CAT's territory almost entirely.
It cuts the other way too. Most MBA programs outside India, and a growing number of internationally focused Indian programs, ask for GMAT or GRE rather than CAT. If your list includes schools abroad, that alone can settle the decision, no matter what the IIMs offer.
