Ranking clues compare position: who is ahead, who finished first, who scored higher. Allocation clues distribute a fixed total: how many, how much, what share.

Take the workshop set from earlier. Its opening line reads: "Eight employees attended a training day split across four workshops, two employees per workshop." The phrases "split across" and "two employees per workshop" are Allocation language, a fixed total of eight distributed into four equal shares, well before any clue names a single employee.

Compare that to a different opening line: "Five runners finished a race, no two at the same time." Nothing here distributes a resource. Every clue that follows will compare positions: faster than, immediately after, second from last. That is Ranking language, and it calls for a line, not a grid of categories.

Watch for sets that mix comparison words with numbers: "at least twice as many," since these can look like Ranking at a glance but are actually Allocation with a ratio constraint. The test is simple: does the clue compare positions, or does it constrain how a fixed total gets divided?
