SIBM Pune is reached through SNAP, a separate examination from CAT, and that fact does more to determine whether the school belongs on your list than any cutoff figure could. It also places SIBM in the group of schools where the useful research question is not what score you need but whether you are sitting the right exam at all.

The second thing worth understanding about this school, and about every school in its category, is that the stage after shortlisting differs substantially between institutes. Preparing for the wrong one is a common and entirely avoidable way to arrive at the decisive moment unready.

The Exam Route Decides Whether the School Is Available

This has to come before any discussion of scores, because it is a binary that closes early.

SIBM Pune uses SNAP. That is a separate examination from CAT, with its own registration window, fee and schedule, and a CAT score does not substitute for it.

Which means the deadline that actually decides whether this school is on your list is that exam's registration window, not the institute's application window and certainly not the CAT result date. A candidate who decides in December that they would like to apply here has already missed the decision.

CAT 2026 is on Sunday 29 November, conducted by IIM Indore. Any additional exam sits in its own window with its own calendar implications, and those have to be reconciled deliberately rather than discovered.

The Stage After Shortlisting Differs by Institute

This is the part most candidates prepare for generically and then meet in a specific form.

A Written Stage Is a Genuinely Separate Skill

Constructing an argument in writing, under time, is not exercised by any part of CAT preparation. It overlaps slightly with reading comprehension work and is otherwise untrained, and an hour a week from December is enough to stop it being a surprise.

A Group Stage Cannot Be Practised Alone

Being heard without dominating, and building on what others have said, is a behaviour rather than a body of knowledge. It improves only with repetition in a group, which makes it the one stage that cannot be prepared for in the week before.

The Interview Returns to What You Supplied

Panels mostly ask about your academic record, your work if you have any, what you studied and why, and your reasons for wanting an MBA. They are testing whether those hold up under a second and third question, which is different from whether you can state them once.

What This Piece Deliberately Does Not Give You

Being explicit is more useful than filling the gap with a plausible figure.

Cutoffs, weightings and the exact stage composition are published per admission cycle by the institute and they change between years. A figure quoted second hand is either from another cycle or has lost the label saying whether it described a qualifying minimum, and either failure produces a plan built on something that was never true for your year.

So the instruction is to read the institute's own admission material for your cycle. Note the entrance exam accepted, that exam's registration window, the institute's application window, the shortlisting inputs and any published weighting, whether a stated figure is a qualifying minimum, and the selection stages.

Six notes, fifteen minutes per school. A list of six schools takes an evening, and that evening is current in a way that no comparison table can be.

Why a Published Weighting Beats a Cutoff

Where a school states its formula, that is far more useful than any threshold, and it is worth knowing what one looks like.

IIFT's shortlist for the 2026 to 2028 batch weighted CAT at 90 percent, work experience at 5 percent and gender diversity at 5 percent. IIT Bombay's SJMSOM used 75 percent CAT, 20 percent academics and 5 percent work experience for its 2026 to 2028 personal interview shortlist. Both need re-verifying per cycle.

Those two numbers do more work than a hundred cutoff figures, because they tell you how the decision is constructed and therefore where marginal effort pays. At 90 percent on the score, the exam is where December goes. At 75 with 20 on academics, a component you cannot change carries real weight, which is an argument for a wider list rather than for additional effort.

Where no weighting is published, which is most schools, the honest position is that you know the inputs and not their proportions. That is still useful and it is less than people assume they have.

The Rules That Hold Across Every School

Four of them, and they apply whichever exam you are sitting.

A qualifying cutoff is a floor to be considered, and the percentile that earns a call sits above it and is usually unpublished. IIM Calcutta's published CAT 2025 general category minimums of 80 sectional and 85 overall illustrate what a qualifying figure looks like.

A call is not an admission, and final selection reweights everything including the stage performance.

The same entrance score produces different outcomes at different schools because the formulas differ, which is the main fact about management admissions rather than a footnote.

And application windows are published independently of result dates, with several across the cycle falling before results are out. December is application and stage preparation month rather than a waiting period.

It serves every application and every interview, and preparing it once beats assembling it piecemeal under four deadlines.

How Many Entrance Exams Is Too Many

Once a candidate accepts that additional exams open additional schools, the temptation is to register for several, and there is a point where that stops helping.

Each exam adds a small, real preparation cost concentrated in its specific rules and formats, plus a date that has to be reconciled with everything else in a crowded November and December. Two is usually manageable alongside a solid CAT preparation. Four means the specific preparation for each becomes token, and a token preparation for an exam is close to not sitting it.

The filter worth applying is simple and uncomfortable: would you actually attend the school this exam opens. Registering for an exam whose schools you would decline is spending attention on optionality you will not use, and it is the commonest reason a candidate's December feels impossible.

Decide that question once, in August, and let it determine the exam list rather than letting the exam list accumulate by default as deadlines approach.
