NITIE Is Now IIM Mumbai: What That Changes for You

There is a school that belongs on most CAT aspirants' lists and gets left off it for a reason that has nothing to do with merit: people are still searching for it under its old name. NITIE is now IIM Mumbai, and it sits inside the IIM system, reached with the CAT score you are already preparing for.

That matters for a practical reason. A candidate building a list from older material, or from a senior's advice given a few years ago, can end up treating this as a separate specialist route requiring some separate decision. It is not. This piece covers what the change means for your list, how its criteria work, and the far more useful question of what actually distinguishes one IIM's process from another's.

The Name Change and Why It Matters to You

The institute formerly known as NITIE is now IIM Mumbai. For an aspirant, the operationally important part is simple: it is inside the IIM system and it runs on CAT.

The reason to state this plainly is that stale information behaves differently from wrong information. Nobody reads a false claim and acts on it here. What happens instead is that someone reads material written before the change, forms a vague impression that this is a specialist institute on some separate track, and never checks again. The school quietly falls off the list without a decision ever being made about it.

That is worth correcting because the cost is asymmetric. Adding a school that takes the exam you are already sitting costs you an application and an afternoon of research. Leaving it off costs you the school entirely.

What Your CAT Score Already Opens

CAT scores are accepted by all 22 IIMs, IIM Guwahati being the newest addition, and by more than a thousand other business schools. IIM Mumbai is inside that set, which means preparing for this school and preparing for any other IIM are the same activity.

CAT 2026 is on Sunday 29 November 2026, conducted by IIM Indore, computer based, across three slots. The paper has three sections, VARC, DILR and QA, each with a hard 40 minute sectional limit, 120 minutes in total. No change to the exam pattern was announced for 2026.

The marking is worth restating because attempt strategy hangs off it entirely. A correct answer is plus three, an incorrect MCQ is minus one, an unattempted question is zero, and Type In The Answer questions carry no negative marking at all. Negative marking therefore applies only to incorrect MCQs, which is why selection and accuracy move a score and raw attempt volume does not.

One Exam, Many Doors

The practical implication of a single accepted exam across a large set of schools is that widening the list is nearly free. Each additional IIM is an application form and a set of criteria to read, not another registration window, another fee and another paper to learn. Candidates routinely under-apply within the CAT system while simultaneously worrying about whether to add a second exam elsewhere, which is close to exactly backwards.

How This School Evaluates Candidates

What is documented is that IIM Mumbai uses CAT and evaluates academics, work experience and other profile factors alongside the score. That is the shape of the criteria, and it is a shape shared by much of the IIM system.

What we are deliberately not doing is handing you percentages. Weightings and cutoffs are published per cycle by each institute and are revised between years, so a figure lifted from a previous batch and presented as current is misinformation with a decimal point attached. The institute's own admission policy for your cycle is the document that binds, and it takes one evening to read properly.

Why the Same Percentile Lands Differently

Two candidates with identical CAT percentiles routinely receive different sets of calls, and nothing mysterious is happening. Each school constructs its shortlist from a different formula, so the same inputs get weighted differently and produce different rankings.

Where a school publishes that formula, it is far more useful than any threshold, because it tells you where marginal effort actually pays. IIFT's 2026 to 2028 shortlist weighted CAT at 90 percent, work experience at 5 and gender diversity at 5, which is a process dominated almost entirely by the exam. IIT Bombay's SJMSOM used 75 percent CAT, 20 percent academics and 5 percent work experience for the same batch, where an academic record carries real weight. IIM Calcutta stated qualifying CAT 2025 minimums of 80 sectional and 85 overall, and the word qualifying is doing genuine work in that sentence. All three need re-verifying per cycle.

What a Profile Actually Contains

A profile is not percentile plus marks. Depending on the institute it can include tenth, twelfth and graduation marks, consistency across the three, sectional scores, work experience, gender diversity, academic diversity, category, professional qualifications, extracurriculars, achievements, positions of responsibility, certifications, internships and gap years, plus performance at the selection stage itself. No school uses all of them and the weightings differ sharply.

Two of those terms get misread often enough to be worth defining. Academic diversity means extra consideration for backgrounds underrepresented in MBA cohorts, which in practice covers humanities, commerce, medicine, law and other non-engineering routes. Work experience generally means full time work after graduation, but what counts varies by institute in terms of months, type of organisation, role and relevance, and every school computes it differently.

The Funnel Almost Nobody Plans For

The full process runs CAT, then application, then shortlisting, then the selection stage, then final selection, then admission. Every school modifies the middle of it. Some run an interview alone, others add a written ability test, a group discussion, a case discussion, an extempore or multiple interview rounds.

Two observations follow, and both cost candidates places every year. A call is not an admission, and the selection stage genuinely reorders the field. And the stage that finally decides the outcome is almost always the one that receives the least preparation, because it arrives after the exam is over and the energy has gone.

The Calendar That Decides It

Results fall in the December to January window, shortlists arrive across January to March with rounds through that period, and final rounds, offers and waitlist movement run to roughly March to May. Starting interview preparation in February is not impossible but it is tight, and the raw material is your own profile and your own reasons rather than anything that requires a result to begin. Where the Exam Work Still Sits

None of the above replaces the score. For a school inside the IIM system the CAT paper remains the largest single input into whether you are considered at all, and the fastest route to improving it is usually sharpening the areas that recur most rather than chasing coverage. Arithmetic and Algebra have historically been the largest contributors to QA, and working through structured arithmetic practice sets tends to return more per hour than a sweep through the tail of the syllabus. That is a sequencing claim about ROI, not permission to skip anything.

The Summary

IIM Mumbai, formerly NITIE, is inside the IIM system and runs on CAT. If you are preparing for CAT, you are preparing for this school, and the only real work is the application and the criteria reading rather than any separate exam decision.

What distinguishes it, and every other school, is not something you can take from a summary. Each institute publishes its own criteria per cycle, weights academics and work experience and profile factors on its own terms, and runs its own selection stages. That is why the same percentile produces different call lists for different people, and why the formula matters more than the threshold.

Do the unglamorous version of list research. Confirm the current name and system for every school on your list, read each institute's own policy for your cycle, read published formulas rather than collecting cutoffs, and treat every stated minimum as a floor. Then spend the rest of your time on the score, because inside this system that is still the largest lever you control.
