CAT Result 2026: Date, Scorecard & 5 Next Steps Plan

Your CAT 2026 scorecard will carry four sets of numbers. Most aspirants only look at one. The composite percentile, screenshotted, shared in WhatsApp groups, and either celebrated or grieved over for the next 48 hours. The other three numbers tell you whether your IIM shortlist will land, where the sectional gap was, and what the next CAT cycle would look like if you decide to attempt again.

This guide walks through the CAT 2026 result release window, the scorecard download flow, the four numbers and what each one signals, the five-tier percentile band map for IIM and non-IIM B-school targeting, and the five next steps to take in the 14 days after result day.

TL;DR

CAT 2026 result expected December 20 to 22, 2026, on iimcat.ac.in. Scorecard download via CAT user ID and password. Four numbers per candidate: raw scores, scaled scores, sectional percentiles, composite percentile. IIM tier targeting depends on composite + sectional combination, not composite alone. Five immediate next steps: download backup, run IIM shortlist projection, start WAT-PI prep if 95+, file non-IIM applications, build CAT 2027 prep if pivoting.

When Does the CAT 2026 Result Release?

The CAT 2026 result is forecast to release between December 20 and December 22, 2026, on iimcat.ac.in, approximately three weeks after the exam day on November 29. The timing follows a fixed post-exam sequence: response sheet release in early December, official answer key around December 5, the 48 to 72 hour objection window closing on December 7 or 8, the final answer key with accepted objections around December 18, and the scorecard following within 2 to 4 days of the final key.

The portal stays accessible 24x7 from result day until late May 2027 for re-downloads. Server load peaks sharply on result-day morning between 10 AM and 1 PM IST, when most aspirants log in within minutes of the release notification. Aspirants who wait until evening face cleaner server response and faster PDF generation. The result-day login uses the same CAT user ID and password issued at registration in August 2026; aspirants who forgot the credentials should use the recovery flow before result day to avoid the helpdesk wait.

Eligibility to download is automatic for any candidate whose application was marked accepted and who appeared on November 29. Candidates who registered but did not appear receive an "absent" scorecard with no percentile assignment. The CAT 2026 result is final once published; no re-evaluation or recheck process is available. The official IIM Indore release calendar follows the cycle that the Optima Learn CAT answer key 2026 guide documents in detail.

The 4 Numbers on Your CAT 2026 Scorecard

The CAT 2026 scorecard carries four interrelated sets of numbers. The composite percentile is the headline, but the other three carry sharper diagnostic information about where the score actually came from and how it will play in IIM shortlist algorithms.

1
Number Set 1

Raw Scores (per section)

Sectional marks using +3 correct, −1 wrong MCQ, 0 wrong TITA or unattempted. VARC max 72, DILR max 60, QA max 66, total max 198. Tells you absolute attempt accuracy.

2
Number Set 2

Scaled Scores

Equipercentile-normalized scores adjusting for slot difficulty across the three exam slots. A raw 130 in a tougher slot scales higher than a raw 130 in an easier slot.

3
Number Set 3

Sectional Percentiles

VARC, DILR, QA percentiles separately, ranking you against all CAT 2026 takers in that section. IIMs apply sectional cutoffs (typically 70 to 90) before composite cutoffs.

4
Number Set 4

Composite Percentile

The headline number. Aggregated percentile across the three sections using the IIM Indore composite formula. The number you screenshot and share.

The critical insight: a high composite percentile with a low sectional percentile blocks shortlists at top IIMs. Composite 99 with VARC 78 fails the IIM Ahmedabad shortlist (sectional cutoff approximately 85 for General candidates) even though the overall number looks elite. Composite 96 with all three sections above 85 sometimes outranks composite 99 with a weak section. Read all four numbers on download day, not just the composite.

The 5-Tier CAT 2026 Percentile Band Map

The Indian B-school admission landscape splits into five percentile tiers, each mapping to a distinct target list of IIMs and non-IIM CAT-accepting institutes. Your composite percentile from the December scorecard drops you into one of these tiers and dictates the next 14 to 60 days of application activity.

99 to 100
Tier 1
Top-tier IIMs in play: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, FMS Delhi, SPJIMR. Also XLRI, MDI, IIFT. Sectional 85+ required for IIM A/B/C shortlist.
8 to 12 shortlists likely
97 to 99
Tier 2
IIM Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode, Shillong. Also SPJIMR, MDI, IIFT, NITIE, IMT Ghaziabad. Sectional 80+ for IIMs.
5 to 8 shortlists likely
93 to 97
Tier 3
Newer IIMs (Trichy, Ranchi, Raipur, Rohtak, Kashipur, Udaipur). NITIE, MDI, IMT, IMI, GIM. Sectional 75+ for IIMs.
4 to 6 shortlists likely
85 to 93
Tier 4
Newest IIMs (Amritsar, Bodhgaya, Jammu, Nagpur, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Vizag). Also IMI, GIM, FORE, BIMTECH, KJ Somaiya, Welingkar.
2 to 4 shortlists likely
Below 85
Tier 5
Non-IIM CAT-accepting schools with lower cutoffs. Tier 2 city B-schools, AICTE-approved private institutes. Consider CAT 2027 reattempt.
Repeater pivot decision

Reserved category cutoffs run 5 to 12 percentile points lower across all tiers. The Optima Learn IIM cutoff 2026 IIM-wise guide breaks down composite and sectional thresholds per IIM, and the non-IIM MBA colleges CAT 2026 guide maps tier-3, tier-4, and tier-5 applications outside the IIM system.

5 Next Steps to Take in the 14 Days After Result Day

The 14 days between result release (around December 21) and the first IIM shortlist announcements (early to mid January) are the most decision-dense window in the CAT cycle. Five actions, in priority order, determine whether the percentile converts into an actual seat.

1

Download and back up the scorecard PDF immediately

Save to email, cloud drive, and USB on result day. The scorecard is the primary admission document for every IIM and non-IIM application in January through April. A single saved PDF skips repeated logins to a slow portal during shortlist verification.

2

Run an IIM shortlist projection using all 4 numbers

Composite alone is misleading. Cross-check composite + each sectional percentile against IIM-specific cutoff tables. Aspirants with composite 99 but sectional 78 in any one section will see top-tier IIM rejections; aspirants with composite 95 but all sectionals above 85 may outperform expectations.

3

File non-IIM CAT-accepting B-school applications by January 5

SPJIMR, MDI, IIFT, IMT, NITIE, IMI, and similar institutes have separate forms with deadlines in late December or early January. Their decisions are independent of IIM shortlists. Filing all relevant non-IIM forms in the result week protects your seat options.

4

Start WAT-PI prep if you are in the 95+ percentile band

IIM shortlists for tier-1 and tier-2 IIMs typically come between January 10 and February 5. WAT-PI rounds start within 2 to 4 weeks of shortlist. Aspirants who wait for the shortlist to start prep have 14 to 21 days; aspirants who start in late December have 30 to 45 days.

5

Make the CAT 2027 reattempt decision by January 7

If your percentile maps to tier 4 or tier 5 and you are willing to reattempt, the CAT 2027 prep arc starts in February. Delaying the decision past January costs the early-prep advantage. The Optima Learn June to November prep plan structure works for CAT 2027 with a similar 6 to 7 month arc.

Common Trap

Aspirants in the 99+ tier sometimes skip non-IIM applications, assuming an IIM seat is automatic. Even at 99.5+ composite, a weak sectional or a poor academic profile can produce a thin shortlist. Filing 3 to 4 non-IIM applications as backup costs roughly rupees 8,000 in total fees and protects against the rare zero-shortlist outcome.

Myth

"My composite is 98, so my CAT result is great." End of analysis.

Reality

Composite 98 with sectional 70 in DILR blocks every tier-1 IIM. The IIM cutoff is composite AND sectional, not composite OR sectional. Read all four numbers.

The CAT 2026 Post-Result Timeline Through April 2027

The result is the start of the next phase, not the end of the CAT cycle. The window from late December through April 2027 covers IIM shortlists, WAT-PI rounds at each IIM, and the final admission offer letters. How the Scorecard Connects to WAT-PI Prep

The four-number breakdown on the scorecard also feeds WAT-PI strategy. Sectional percentiles are read by IIM interview panels: a low VARC percentile prompts grammar and reading-speed questions at the personal interview, a low QA percentile prompts numerical aptitude probing, and a low DILR percentile prompts case-based reasoning questions. Aspirants who anticipate the questions tied to their weak section walk into the WAT-PI room prepared instead of defensive.

The Optima Learn IIM WAT-PI preparation guide covers the section-wise WAT-PI question patterns, and the CAT score vs percentile 2026 guide shows how raw scores convert to percentile bands across recent cycles.

The Rulebook
Six Rules of the CAT 2026 Result Window
  1. Download the scorecard on result day; save to email, cloud, and USB immediately.
  2. Read all 4 numbers, not just composite. Sectional percentile is the IIM gate.
  3. Run IIM tier projection using composite + each sectional, not composite alone.
  4. File 3 to 4 non-IIM applications in the result week regardless of tier; they are independent decisions.
  5. Start WAT-PI prep on December 22 if your composite is 95+; do not wait for shortlist announcements.
  6. Make the CAT 2027 reattempt decision by January 7; February prep beats March prep by a full month.

The composite percentile is one number. The scorecard tells you four. Read all four. Build the next 14 days around the gap, not the headline.
