CAT 2026 Registration: 8 Steps, Dates and Fee Decoded
Today is May 15, 2026. The CAT 2026 notification is roughly 73 days away, registration opens in about 78 days, and the application form closes around 121 days from now. The window looks generous on paper. It is not. Aspirants who treat CAT 2026 registration as a one-evening task in early September discover that one missing certificate, one rejected photograph, or one wrong city preference can lock the form into a 14-day correction loop.
This guide builds the full registration runway: the notification timeline, the eligibility decoder for General and reserved categories, the eight-document vault to assemble before August, the fee bands, the 8-step application walk-through, and the city preference logic that decides where you sit on November 29, 2026.
CAT 2026 registration window: August 1 to September 13, 2026 (forecast). Conducted by IIM Indore. Eligibility: 50% graduation aggregate (45% for SC, ST, PwD), final-year students included, no age limit. Fee: rupees 2,500 General/EWS/NC-OBC, rupees 1,250 SC/ST/PwD. Eight documents, eight form steps, six city preferences. The blog gives the full pre-application stack.
The 4-Layer CAT 2026 Registration Stack
CAT 2026 registration is not a form. It is four layers stacked in a fixed order. Skipping a layer or running them out of sequence is the most common reason aspirants miss the early window or get caught in the correction-window scramble. The stack works as a checklist before the form opens, then as a 60-minute application sequence on the day you submit.
Eligibility Decoder
Confirm the 50%/45% graduation aggregate, final-year status, and category certificate validity. This is a one-evening audit, but it routes everything downstream.
Document Vault
Assemble eight scanned files at the right size and format. Most rejections come from a wrong photograph spec, not a missing document.
Fee & Slot
Decide category fee band, payment mode, and the six city preferences in ranked order. The city ranking is final after submission.
Application Day Protocol
The 60-minute walk-through across eight on-portal steps, plus the post-submit verification window that lasts 10 to 14 days.
Layer 1: CAT 2026 Eligibility Decoder
CAT 2026 eligibility runs on three filters. Most aspirants clear all three. A small fraction get caught on filter two (final-year status) or filter three (category certificate validity), and the time to fix either runs into weeks.
Filter one: graduation aggregate. A bachelor's degree of at least three years from a recognised university. Aggregate threshold is 50 percent for General, EWS, and NC-OBC; 45 percent for SC, ST, and PwD. The aggregate is computed across all years and subjects, not just the major. Professional qualifications such as CA, CS, ICWA, and FIAI count as equivalent provided they meet the same threshold. The Optima Learn CAT eligibility criteria guide walks through the official equivalence list.
Filter two: final-year graduation status. Final-year students are eligible to apply for CAT 2026 with provisional status. The form requires the latest semester transcript instead of a final mark sheet, and the final certificate must be produced before the IIM joining deadline (typically June 2027 for the 2027 batch). Aspirants whose results are delayed past the joining deadline lose admission even after clearing CAT, so check your university's results calendar early.
Filter three: category certificate. OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, and PwD candidates need a valid certificate issued by a competent authority. OBC-NCL and EWS certificates expire and must be reissued for the current financial year. The certificate must be uploaded at registration; a missing or expired certificate at admit-card stage is treated as a General-category application and disqualifies the candidate from category-cutoff benefits.
Final-year aspirants often assume they can update mark sheets after CAT scores release. They cannot. The transcript uploaded at registration is the document IIMs evaluate at shortlist stage. If your university releases the seventh-semester result in late November, request a provisional transcript in writing before August.
Layer 2: The 8-Document CAT 2026 Vault
Every CAT 2026 application needs eight scanned documents at the right format and size. The application portal rejects files that exceed the size cap or use the wrong colour profile. Build the vault in July, before the registration window opens, so the form-day session takes 60 minutes instead of three days.
Save all eight files in a single Google Drive folder labelled "CAT 2026 Vault" with consistent naming (01_photo.jpg, 02_signature.jpg, and so on). On submission day, you upload from one location instead of hunting across email, downloads, and WhatsApp.
Layer 3: CAT 2026 Application Fee & City Preferences
The CAT 2026 application fee is set by IIM Indore and confirmed at notification. Based on the recent five-year cycle, the working fee bands are below. Final figures arrive on or around July 27, 2026; the difference between forecast and actual is typically rupees 100 to 200.
The fee has stayed near rupees 2,500 across recent cycles, with marginal drift. Some recent forecasts place CAT 2026 at rupees 2,600 General and rupees 1,300 SC/ST/PwD. Either band fits standard CAT preparation budgeting. Aspirants applying from outside India pay a higher fee, around rupees 5,000.
City preferences close the registration form. Aspirants pick six test cities in ranked order. The official allocation runs after the registration deadline closes, with most candidates receiving one of their top three. The full city list runs to about 156 to 160 cities across India. Picking strategy matters: ranking a tier-1 metropolitan first reduces the risk of a remote tier-3 allocation with poor exam-day logistics.

Pre-Stage My CAT 2026 ApplicationLayer 4: The 8-Step CAT 2026 Application Walk-Through
On the day you submit the form, the portal asks for the same eight document set, in roughly the same eight steps, every cycle. The sequence below mirrors the iimcat.ac.in flow from past cycles. Most aspirants finish in 50 to 70 minutes if the vault is ready; the rest spend three to four sessions over a week.
Use a long-life email and a number you will keep through May 2027. Both receive admit-card and result alerts. The user ID generated here is the login for the next ten months.
Name (matching photo ID), DOB, gender, nationality, category. Category cannot be changed after submission, so verify the certificate validity before this step.
Class 10, 12, graduation marks. The portal auto-computes aggregate. Final-year aspirants enter the latest semester percentage; final mark sheet upload happens at IIM admission stage.
Months of full-time work, sector, role. EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD details. Work-ex months affect IIM composite scoring; the CAT work experience scoring guide covers the IIM-wise weight bands.
Pick the IIM programmes you want to be considered for (PGP, PGP-X, PGP-FABM, PGP-HRM). Non-IIM B-schools accepting CAT have separate forms; this section only covers IIM choices.
Lock the six city ranks. Allocation runs after the window closes. Rank order is final at submission.
Photo, signature, photo ID, class 10/12, graduation, category certificate, PwD certificate. All eight from your vault folder. The portal enforces size and format caps.
UPI, net banking, debit card, credit card. Receipt PDF appears immediately. Application status moves to "received" within 24 hours, "accepted" in 10 to 14 days after IIM Indore validates the upload pack.
"I should wait for the last week to apply — the system glitches early on."
The opposite. The first two weeks are the cleanest. Server load peaks in the final 72 hours of the window, and the correction window opens later than the submission deadline.
The CAT 2026 Notification & Admit Card Timeline
The official notification anchors all downstream dates. Until IIM Indore publishes it on iimcat.ac.in (forecast late July 2026), the dates below are working estimates derived from the past five CAT cycles. Treat them as a planning baseline and re-check on July 27.
| Window | Date (forecast) | Action for the aspirant |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-notification | May 15 to July 26 | Build the document vault. Audit category certificate. Confirm graduation aggregate. Start the Optima Learn 7-month CAT 2026 prep timeline. |
| Notification week | July 27 (Sunday) | Read the official notification end-to-end. Confirm fee, dates, eligibility, programme list. |
| Registration opens | August 1 (Friday) | Submit form within first three weeks. Lock city preferences. Save receipt PDF. |
| Correction window | Late September (5–7 days) | Edit photo, signature, programme choice if flagged. Category cannot be changed. |
| Admit card release | November 12 | Download admit card, print three copies, verify city allocation. |
| Exam day | November 29 (Sunday) | Carry admit card + government photo ID. Slot timing as per allocated city. |
Three Mistakes That Cost Aspirants the Window
Across the last three CAT cycles, the same three registration errors keep recurring. Each one is fixable in advance; each one becomes terminal in the final week.
About one in five rejected applications fails on photograph specs: wrong background colour, file size above 300 KB, face area too small, or a vintage older than six months. Get the photograph clicked at a studio that knows the CAT spec, not from a phone.
OBC-NCL and EWS certificates issued before April 2026 may not count as valid for the 2026-27 financial year. Get them reissued in May or June. Submitting an expired certificate downgrades your application to General category at shortlist stage, even if registration goes through.
Server load spikes in the last 72 hours of the registration window. Aspirants who submit on the final day risk payment failure, OTP delay, or upload errors with no time to retry. Submit by September 5 at the latest. The form does not need to be perfect; it needs to be in.
How CAT 2026 Registration Sets Up the Rest of Your Prep
Registration is a logistics task, but it doubles as a calibration moment. Submitting the form by mid-August frees the next 14 weeks for actual prep. Aspirants who push registration into the last week often lose 15 to 20 productive hours to admin scramble.
The Optima Learn CAT 2026 exam pattern guide covers the structural forecast for November 29, and the IIM cutoff 2026 IIM-wise breakdown maps the percentile bands you need at each IIM. Reserved-category aspirants should also check the CAT 2026 reserved category cutoffs guide for the OBC, SC, ST, EWS percentile thresholds.
- Run the eligibility decoder by July 1, not after the notification drops on July 27.
- Build the 8-document vault in a single Drive folder before August 1, with the photograph reshot to spec.
- Submit the form within the first three weeks of the window (by August 22), not in the final 72 hours.
- Rank six test cities deliberately: tier-1 metros first, tier-2 backups last. Allocation is final.
- Save the fee receipt and application number in three locations (email, drive, printed). You will need them at admit-card stage.
- Treat the September correction window as a buffer, not a redo. Photo, signature, and programme are editable; category is not.
Most CAT aspirants do not have a registration problem. They have a sequencing problem. Start the vault now.
