Time and Work is the most formula-optional topic in CAT arithmetic, nearly every question in it yields to assuming a convenient total work, usually the LCM of the given times, and then working in units per day. Candidates who memorise the standard combined-work formulas tend to be slower and less accurate than those who set the total and compute rates, because the formulas break as soon as the question adds a wrinkle like alternating days or someone leaving partway.

Time and Work for CAT, answered

What CAT asks in Time and Work, the mistakes that cost the most marks, and how to practise it.

People working together and separately, work done in alternating days, workers joining or leaving partway through, efficiency comparisons between workers, and pipes and cisterns, which is the same topic with an inlet as positive work and a leak as negative work.

Set total work to the LCM of the individual times, convert each worker into units per day, and add or subtract rates. This handles alternating-day and partial-participation variants that the standard combined formula cannot, and it needs no memorisation.

Mathematically yes, a filling pipe is positive work and a leak is negative work. The only new thing to watch is questions where a tank starts partially full, which changes the total rather than the rates.

Every question here has been checked against a worked solution before being published, and anything without a complete solution is not shown at all. The bank mixes questions written for CAT-level practice with questions from actual CAT papers; the previous-year questions are collected separately under CAT PYQs. The solutions themselves open in practice mode once you sign up, which is free.
