How to Practise DILR When You Run Out of Real Sets

Serious DILR preparation runs into a supply problem that the other two sections do not have. Quant questions are effectively unlimited. Reading passages are everywhere. Genuine CAT-standard logical reasoning and data interpretation sets are finite, and a candidate working steadily will exhaust the ones from past papers well before the exam.
The usual response is to go looking for more, from sources of declining quality, and that turns out to be the wrong move. Sets are not the only input DILR practice needs, and by the time you have run out you have almost certainly under-used the ones you already have.
Re-using a set well is worth more than meeting a poor new one. Rebuild from the types in CAT DILR practice chapters rather than hunting for volume.
- Running out of sets usually means you have been extracting one thing from each when there are several.
- A solved set can be re-used for representation practice, for selection drills and for timed re-attempts.
- The ranking drill needs sets you have already solved, so old material is ideal for it.

What a Set Is Actually Worth
Most aspirants take one thing from a set and discard it, which is why the supply runs out.
The first use is solving it, and that is the one everybody makes. It builds reasoning and familiarity with the type, and once the answer is known that particular value is spent.
But a solved set retains several other uses. It can be re-attempted under a tighter clock to test whether your setup is now automatic. It can be re-drawn with a different representation to see which structure handles it best. It can be used in a ranking drill, where knowing the answer is an advantage rather than a problem.
So a candidate with two hundred solved sets has a large practice library and believes they have none, because they are measuring supply in unsolved sets specifically.
Treating a set as consumed once the answer is known. The answer was never the point. What transfers is the representation, the recognition cue and the judgment about whether to commit, and all three can be practised again on material whose solution you remember.
Four Ways to Re-Use What You Have
Each extracts a different component, and together they cover most of what the section requires.
- Setup only. Re-open twenty solved sets and do nothing but draw the structure and enter the given constraints. No solving. This makes representations automatic.
- The ranking drill. Five sets, ninety seconds each, ranked by expected solvability. Knowing the answers lets you check your judgment immediately.
- Timed re-attempt. Redo a set you solved slowly, under a tighter clock, weeks later. If it is still slow, the representation is not yet automatic.
- Alternative representation. Solve a familiar set again with a different structure. This is where you learn which structures hold which relationships.
Setup Only Practice Is the Most Underrated
A large share of the time in a real set goes into orientation and setup, and neither is exercised by reading solutions. Twenty sets, setup only, takes about half an hour and directly targets the phase where most of the clock actually goes.
The Ranking Drill Wants Solved Sets
Judging solvability without solving is the single highest return drill in DILR, and it requires knowing the outcome to check your judgment against. Sets you have already worked are therefore the ideal material rather than a compromise.
Re-Attempts Test Whether Anything Stuck
A set that took you nine minutes in July should take four in October if the representation has become automatic. If it still takes nine, you have learned the answer rather than the method, which is a useful and uncomfortable thing to discover before November.

Why Poor Quality Sets Are Worse Than None
The instinct when supply runs low is to widen the net, and that carries a real cost.
Badly constructed sets train the wrong recognition. If a source produces sets that resolve through brute force case work, or that depend on ambiguous conditions, you are building instincts for a paper that does not behave that way. Recognition is the thing you are trying to build, and it is only valuable if it matches what CAT actually does.
Ambiguous sets are worse still, because they teach you to distrust your own reading. A candidate who has spent weeks on sets with genuinely unclear conditions develops a habit of second guessing constraints that are perfectly clear, which is expensive under a clock.
The test worth applying to any source is whether its sets resolve through elimination from firm constraints. If a set only yields through exhaustive enumeration, it is a puzzle rather than a CAT set, and practising it is a different activity.
Before adopting a new source, solve three of its sets and ask whether each one resolved because constraints eliminated possibilities. If they resolved by trying every case until something fit, the source is training a habit the section punishes.
Safe Adjacent Material
Some material outside CAT sets builds real components without the quality risk, and it is worth knowing which.
For the data interpretation half, real tables and charts from published reports work well. Take any dense table, set yourself questions about percentage change, ranking and share, and practise reading headers, units and bases accurately. That is exactly the skill DI failures come from, and the material is unlimited.
For the logical reasoning half, sets from other management entrance exams are closer in spirit than recreational puzzles, though they vary in difficulty and should be treated as supplementary rather than as a substitute.
What does not transfer well is recreational logic puzzles. They build reasoning, which is usually not the binding constraint, and they supply no selection practice, no penalty structure and none of the data interpretation half.
Mentors asked about running out of sets almost always find the candidate has solved a great deal and reviewed very little. The sets were consumed at one use each, no representations were extracted, and no ranking drill was ever run. The supply problem was a review problem wearing a different costume.
You Have More Material Than You Think

Rationing new sets while keeping the practice full is a scheduling problem with a straightforward answer.
Spend new sets only on timed mixed blocks, where they do the one job that requires novelty: testing selection and execution against material you have not seen. That is worth the scarcity.
Use solved sets for everything else. One setup-only session a week, one ranking drill, and a timed re-attempt of something from two months ago. None of those needs fresh material and all three target components that solving alone does not.
That shape typically halves your consumption of new sets while increasing the amount of DILR practice you are doing, which is the opposite of what the supply anxiety suggests is possible.
What to Keep for the Final Weeks
Hold back a handful of unseen sets for the last fortnight, so that your final timed blocks are genuine tests rather than recall. Candidates who use everything by October find their last mocks are measuring memory. Working across types including caselet sets in the earlier phase keeps the reserve varied.
The Log That Makes Re-Use Possible

Does Remembering the Answer Ruin a Re-Attempt?
This is the objection candidates raise immediately, and it is worth answering properly because it is what stops most people re-using anything.
For a timed re-attempt, partial recall is a smaller problem than it seems. You rarely remember the full resolved structure of a set from two months ago; what returns is a vague sense of the answer, which does not help you rebuild the grid. If the re-attempt is fast, that is because the representation became automatic, and if it is slow, the vague memory did not rescue you, which is the information you wanted.
For setup-only work and ranking drills the objection does not apply at all. Setup practice is not asking you to find an answer, and the ranking drill is explicitly better when you know the outcome, since that is what you are checking your judgment against.
Where recall genuinely does spoil things is a full timed block used as a performance measure. That is the one use that needs unseen material, and it is exactly why new sets should be rationed to those blocks.
The Answer
Running out of official DILR sets is a real constraint and it is usually less binding than it feels, because most candidates have been extracting one thing from each set when there are four or five available.
A solved set still trains representation speed, selection judgment and whether your method actually stuck, and two of those are the components that decide sections. Sets you have already worked are the right material for all three, which means your library is considerably larger than your count of unsolved sets suggests.
Where you do need new material, be selective about the source, because sets that resolve through brute force train instincts the section punishes. And ration what you have: new sets for timed blocks, solved sets for everything else, with a handful held back so the final fortnight is a test rather than a recollection.
