Percentages are the foundation the rest of CAT arithmetic is built on, and the topic where fluency pays back fastest, successive percentage changes, percentage point versus percentage, and reverse percentages appear inside profit and loss, data interpretation and growth questions constantly. The goal of practising here is not to learn a method but to stop needing one: recognising that a 25% increase is a multiplication by 5/4 turns multi-step questions into single-step ones.

Percentages for CAT, answered

What CAT asks in Percentages, the mistakes that cost the most marks, and how to practise it.

Percentage increase and decrease, successive changes, reverse percentages (finding the original from the final value), percentage points versus percentages, and percentage change in products, which underpins a large share of data interpretation questions.

Multiply the factors rather than adding the percentages: a 20% rise followed by a 20% fall is 1.2 x 0.8 = 0.96, a net 4% fall, not zero. Converting each change to a fraction makes this fast enough to do mentally.

A move from 40% to 44% is a 4 percentage-point rise but a 10% increase. CAT and CAT-level data interpretation both exploit this distinction regularly, so it is worth reading the question for which one is being asked.

Every question here has been checked against a worked solution before being published, and anything without a complete solution is not shown at all. The bank mixes questions written for CAT-level practice with questions from actual CAT papers; the previous-year questions are collected separately under CAT PYQs. The solutions themselves open in practice mode once you sign up, which is free.
