Why Do Non Engineers Struggle in CAT VARC As Well?

The standard story about CAT sections is tidy. Engineers are strong in quant and weak in VARC, humanities and commerce graduates are the reverse, and everyone prepares against their expected weakness.
The story is wrong often enough to be worth dismantling. Plenty of non engineering graduates, including candidates who read constantly and studied text heavy subjects for years, find VARC harder than they expected and cannot work out why. The reasons are specific, and several of them are consequences of exactly the training that was supposed to help.

Why the Expectation Is the First Problem

A candidate who believes VARC is their strong section prepares for quant. That is rational allocation given the belief, and it means the first serious VARC section they sit under exam conditions may be in September.
By then the engineer who assumed VARC was their weakness has been working it deliberately for months. The gap that shows up in October is frequently a gap in practice rather than in ability, and it reads to the non engineer as a mysterious failure of something they were supposed to be good at.
That misreading then produces the wrong response. Rather than practising the section, the candidate concludes something is wrong with their reading and returns to reading more, which was never the constraint.
Assuming a section is handled because the subject matter is familiar. VARC does not test whether you can read; it tests whether you can select the one option a passage supports, under a clock, with a penalty for being wrong. Familiarity with prose is an input to that and not the same skill.
The Three Mechanisms
Each one is a way that a text heavy education can work against you in this specific format.
- Interpretation over selection. Humanities work rewards a defensible reading. CAT rewards the reading the author committed to, and several defensible readings can be wrong.
- Fluency becomes skimming. Comfortable readers move quickly and form a confident impression, which is precisely what produces confident wrong answers.
- Tolerance for ambiguity. Trained readers are comfortable holding two readings at once. The section requires you to collapse to one or to leave the question.
Defensible Is Not the Same as Correct
This is the largest of the three. In an essay, a reading supported by the text and argued well earns credit even if another reading is also available. In CAT, one option is correct and the others are wrong however reasonable they look, and an option can be true, sensible and entirely consistent with the passage while still being wrong because the passage did not claim it.
Candidates trained to argue for readings find this genuinely irritating, and the irritation is diagnostic. Complaining that two options were both defensible usually means you were assessing defensibility rather than textual support.
Fast Reading Produces an Impression
A comfortable reader finishes a passage quickly and feels they have it. That feeling is an impression of the argument rather than a precise grip on what was and was not claimed, and CAT questions are built to distinguish those two states. The slower, more effortful reader sometimes ends up more accurate for exactly this reason.
Ambiguity Has to Be Resolved or Abandoned
Holding two interpretations in tension is a mark of good reading elsewhere and is unaffordable here. Either you can eliminate to a single supportable option, or the correct move is to leave the question, because a wrong multiple choice answer deducts a mark while a blank costs nothing.

The Scope Error Everyone Makes
This one crosses backgrounds and it is worth isolating because it is the quietest source of losses.
The passage says a policy produced a particular effect in a particular decade. The option says the policy is effective. That is a small promotion of a narrow claim into a general one, and it is wrong, and it is almost invisible unless you are watching for it specifically.
Non engineers are not immune to this and are sometimes more prone to it, because summarising an argument into its general form is exactly what essay writing trains. The section wants the opposite: the claim at the scope the author used, no wider.
The countermeasure is mechanical. Read every option for the words that set scope, such as always, most, generally, in some cases, and check each against the passage. The correct option usually matches the passage's scope precisely, and wrong options frequently differ from it only there.
Before looking at the options, state the author's position in one sentence in your own words. Options are designed to be plausible, so meeting them without your own reading already fixed lets them do your thinking for you. This single habit removes a large share of both scope and inference errors.
The Three Rules That Fix It
The repair is the same regardless of background, which is itself the useful finding.
Textual support is the first. For any option you are about to choose, be able to point at the line or two that support it. If you cannot point, you inferred it, and unanchored inference is where most wrong answers come from.
Scope checking is the second. Compare the scope words in each option against the passage, deliberately, until it becomes automatic.
The leave rule is the third and it is the hardest. If you cannot eliminate to a single option, leave the question. For a reader trained to always have a view, declining to have one is the most uncomfortable instruction in CAT preparation, and it is worth the most marks.
Mentors find that error logs from humanities backgrounds and engineering backgrounds converge on the same two clusters: options that were reasonable but unsupported, and questions that should have been left. The route in differs, the destination does not, and so does the repair.

Practise VARC as though it were a weak section, from the beginning. Not because it is, but because the section rewards format familiarity and no amount of background substitutes for having sat forty timed minutes of it twenty times.
Classify your errors rather than counting them. Misread the passage, unsupported inference, scope error, or should have left it. Most candidates from text heavy backgrounds find the first category nearly empty, which redirects the work immediately.
Work the verbal ability block deliberately. Para summary, para jumbles and odd sentence out reward a learnable technique, they are among the fastest gains in the section, and they are routinely neglected by candidates who assume their reading covers everything.
The Advantage That Is Real
Once the three rules are in place, a strong reading background genuinely pays. You bring stamina, vocabulary and comfort with dense argument that takes others months to build, and those are the slow components. What you are adding is a set of rules, which is fast.

The Quant Side of the Same Assumption
The mirror image of this problem is worth flagging, because the two errors usually travel together in the same candidate.
A non engineering graduate who assumes VARC is handled has also usually decided quant is the mountain, and that framing produces its own distortion. Quant gets treated as a content problem to be conquered by revisiting material, when for most aspirants the content is already present and the constraint is recognition and selection under a clock. The evidence is the same untimed test: solve your failed quant questions with no clock, and if you can, the mathematics was never the issue.
So the same candidate can be under-practising the section they assume is safe and mis-diagnosing the section they assume is hard. Correcting both is mostly a matter of replacing assumptions with two pieces of measurement, and both take an evening.
The Honest Summary
Non engineers struggle in CAT VARC for three reasons that have nothing to do with reading ability being absent.
They practise it less, because they assume it is handled. They bring an interpretive habit that selects defensible readings rather than supported ones. And they are comfortable with ambiguity in a format that charges a mark for failing to resolve it.
None of that is a deficiency and all of it is fixable quickly, because it is method rather than capacity. The three rules are the same ones an engineer needs, arrived at from a different direction, and a candidate who already reads well and then adds them is in a stronger position than either group starting from scratch.
