IIM Shillong occupies a position most aspirants handle badly: an IIM, but not one of the institutes whose process they have read about, which means it usually gets applied to on assumption. The assumption is that it works like the older IIMs with a lower threshold, and that framing is wrong in a way that costs real decisions.

IIM Bangalore considers CAT, academics, work experience and other profile factors, then runs a written ability test and interview. IIM Kozhikode names diversity explicitly among its inputs. Those are five different processes, and a candidate preparing for a written ability test who meets an interview-centred process, or the reverse, has prepared for the wrong stage.

The Academic Record Is More Than One Number

Where academics feature, institutes typically read tenth, twelfth and graduation rather than a single figure, and some look at consistency across the three. That matters differently for a candidate whose performance improved sharply at degree level than for one whose did not, and it is fixed by the time you are applying, which is an argument for knowing how much it counts early.

Profile Factors Are Concrete

Depending on the institute, a profile can include academic record, work experience, gender diversity, academic diversity, category, professional qualifications, extracurriculars, achievements, positions of responsibility, certifications, internships and gap years, plus performance at the selection stage. No school uses all of them and the weightings differ sharply.

The Selection Stage Decides More Than the Shortlist

A call is not an admission. Final selection reweights everything including the stage performance, so a candidate who treated the shortlist as the finish line arrives at the decisive moment having prepared for the qualifying one.

The Cutoff Question

Aspirants arrive at this topic wanting a number and it is the least useful thing to want.

Cutoffs are published per admission cycle by each institute and they change between years. A figure quoted second hand is either from another cycle or has lost the label that said whether it was a qualifying minimum, and either failure produces a plan built on something that was never true for your year.

The qualifying versus call distinction does most of the damage. A published minimum is the floor below which you are not considered at all, and the percentile that actually earns an interview call sits above it and is generally not published. IIM Calcutta's published CAT 2025 general category minimums of 80 sectional and 85 overall are a clean example of a qualifying figure, and nobody should read that as a call threshold.

So read the current policy at source, note whether any figure is described as qualifying, and plan on the assumption that a call requires more than the floor.

What to Do With This for Your List

Three actions, and all three are available before results arrive.

The first is to read the admission policy for every school on your list rather than only the top two. Four notes per school: the application window, the shortlisting inputs and any published weighting, whether a stated figure is a qualifying minimum, and the selection stages.

The second is to check the pattern across the list. If every school weights work experience heavily and you have none, the list is badly shaped for you regardless of how impressive it looks. Scores are accepted by all 22 IIMs and more than a thousand other schools, so there is room to shape it deliberately.

The third is to prepare for the actual stage each school runs. A written ability test rewards constructing an argument in writing under time pressure, which CAT preparation never builds directly. An interview-centred process rewards being able to discuss your own decisions under follow-up questioning. Those need different practice.

Timing the Applications

Institute application windows are published independently of the CAT result date and several across the cycle fall before results are out. December is application and interview preparation month rather than a waiting period.

Shortlists arrive across January to March with rounds through that window, and final rounds, offers and waitlist movement running to roughly March to May. Beginning in February leaves very little room, and the material is your own profile rather than anything requiring a percentile. The Question Panels Ask About Any School

There is a practical reason to research a school properly beyond deciding whether to apply, and it arrives in the interview.

Panels routinely ask why this institute, and the answer is visibly different between a candidate who has read the school's own material and one who has read a ranking. The second answer is generic and everyone in the room recognises it as generic, including the candidate delivering it. The first is specific, and specificity is what a panel is actually listening for.

That makes the evening of policy reading do double duty. It shapes the list and it supplies the content for a question that will certainly be asked, which means the research is never wasted even at schools you end up not attending.

What a Generic Answer Signals

It is worth understanding what the panel infers, because candidates assume the risk is only a weak answer. A generic response signals that the school is a fallback, that the application was one of many submitted identically, and that the candidate has not thought about fit in either direction.

None of that is fatal on its own and all of it is avoidable. A candidate who can name something specific about the programme, the stage structure or what the institute says it looks for has answered a question that most people in the queue answer with a sentence about reputation.

The material for that answer is the same document you were reading to decide whether to apply, which is the argument for doing the reading once, carefully, in October rather than twice, badly, under two different deadlines.

Keep the notes somewhere you will find them in January, since by then the details will have blurred and rereading four policies under interview pressure is a worse use of the week.
