The Cutoff Question, Answered Honestly

Cutoffs are published per admission cycle by each institute, and they change. Any figure quoted second hand is either out of date or attached to a different year than the one you are applying in, which makes it worse than useless because it feels like information.

Generally it means full time work after graduation, and institutes differ on what qualifies and how it converts. Some count months, some weight the type of organisation, some consider the role or its relevance to management education. Internships and pre-graduation work usually sit outside the definition entirely, and a candidate counting them will overestimate their own position.

There is also a ceiling effect worth knowing. At several schools the benefit of additional experience flattens after a point, so the difference between two years and four is smaller than the difference between none and two. A candidate deciding whether to work another year before applying should read that specific school's treatment rather than assuming more is linearly better.

What Freshers Should Take From This

A candidate applying straight from college has no work experience component, and that is not the disadvantage it can feel like. Where a school allocates a modest share to work experience, the remainder still sits with the entrance score, academics and the interview stages, all of which are available to a fresher.

The more useful response is to know which schools on your list weight experience heavily and which do not, and to make sure the list is not composed entirely of the first kind. That is a research question with a finite answer, and it is considerably more productive than the general anxiety it usually replaces.

The same reasoning applies to category and to professional qualifications, both of which appear in some institutes' criteria and not in others. Knowing which of your applications will read a given component, rather than assuming all of them will, is most of what useful admissions research consists of.
