Is CAT DILR Really the Hardest Section? A Closer Look

Ask a room of CAT aspirants which section frightens them most and DILR wins comfortably. Ask them why, and the answers converge on a feeling rather than a fact: it is unpredictable, the sets are long, and a bad day there can sink an otherwise good paper.
All three of those are true, and none of them makes DILR harder in the way aspirants mean. The section is not built from more difficult material. It is built so that a single decision, made in the first two minutes, determines most of what follows. That concentration of consequence is what people are actually describing when they call it the hardest section, and it is a very different problem from difficulty.

Quant has a stable syllabus. Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number system and modern mathematics recur in recognisable proportions, so preparation can be sequenced by historical frequency with reasonable confidence.
DILR is not chapter based in that way. Data interpretation spans tables, bar and line charts, pie charts, caselets, Venn diagrams, networks and quant-heavy DI. Logical reasoning spans arrangements, games and tournaments, scheduling, distribution, selection, routes and networks, puzzles and binary logic. Which of those appear, and in what mix, has swung between years.
So "this set type carries X marks" is the wrong frame entirely. What you can do is prepare across the recurring types, which historically include arrangements, games and tournaments, distribution and selection, tables and caselets, networks and scheduling, and then build the selection skill that lets you handle whatever mix arrives.

Variance is genuine. The response is not to reduce it to zero, which is impossible, but to cap the downside. A firm rule about abandoning a set at a fixed time converts a potential disaster into a modest loss, and that single rule does more for DILR scores than additional set practice.
The Third Argues for Breadth, Not Depth
Because the mix moves, meeting many set types matters more than mastering a few. An aspirant who has seen a network set before will handle one under time; an aspirant who has only done arrangements very well will not. Spend the first three minutes of the section reading every set without solving any of them, then choose. It feels like wasting three minutes and it is the highest return time in the section. A choice made after seeing all the options is categorically better than one made by starting at the top.

The conventional order is to learn set types, practise them individually, then sit full sections. That order builds solving ability and leaves selection to be acquired by accident in mocks, which is why so many aspirants can solve sets and cannot score in the section.
The better order adds a step. Learn the types, practise them individually, practise mixed sets, and then deliberately train selection as its own skill. That last step is the one almost nobody does, and it is the one the section is built around.
Training it is straightforward. Take five sets, spend ninety seconds on each without solving, rank them by expected solvability, then solve them all and check how good your ranking was. Ten repetitions of that will change your section score more than fifty solved sets.

Bad DILR sections are memorable in a way bad quant sections are not. Losing four marks across a quant paper feels like a gradual disappointment. There is also a feedback problem. When quant goes badly you can usually name the chapters that let you down, which makes the failure feel addressable. When DILR goes badly the honest description is often "I picked the wrong set", which sounds like bad luck rather than a fixable skill. A failure that feels like luck produces fear instead of a plan.
That distinction matters practically. Fear pushes aspirants toward doing more sets, which is the response that would help a knowledge gap. A selection problem needs a different response entirely, and the volume approach can run for months without touching it.
How to Tell Which Problem You Have
Three diagnostics separate a reasoning problem from a selection problem, and they point at different work.
- Solve a bad section untimed. If you can complete the sets you failed, the constraint was time and choice, not reasoning.
- Count the minutes spent on sets that yielded nothing. If that figure is large, selection is your problem regardless of anything else.
- Check where in the section your marks came from. Marks clustered in the last fifteen minutes usually mean you wasted the first twenty-five.
- Note how many sets you read before committing. If the answer is one, you were not choosing, you were starting.
- Look at whether you finished sets you started. A pattern of abandoned half-solved sets is an abandonment-rule problem rather than a skill gap.

So Is It the Hardest Section

What follows from that is a preparation emphasis rather than extra fear. If the risk is concentrated in one early decision, then the decision is where the preparation belongs, and the good news is that decisions improve faster than reasoning does.
