CAT Quant Difficulty: Grade Any Question in 10 Seconds

Minute thirty two of a Quant sectional. You are four minutes into a question that looked routine on the first read, the algebra has grown a third variable, and you have passed the point where quitting feels acceptable. You finish it, correctly, and there are six minutes left for eleven unread questions.
Everyone knows the advice: pick the easy ones first. Nobody explains how to tell, and that is the whole problem. Grading CAT quant questions is a skill with actual signals in it, and the signals are readable in about ten seconds, before you have committed a single line of working.
Grading is trained separately from solving. Open a mixed set of CAT Quant chapter practice and grade twenty questions without solving any of them.
- Difficulty is not a property of the question. It is the gap between the question and you.
- Three reads grade a question in ten seconds: the shape of the stem, the numbers, and the ask.

- Ugly numbers signal a structural method rather than a computational one, so they warn of length rather than difficulty.
- A grade is not a skip decision. It is an attempt order, and the two are different.
Why Difficulty Is a Property of You
Two aspirants meet the same question. One has drilled coordinate geometry and finds it routine. The other has not, and finds it unreadable. The question did not change. Difficulty is relational, which is why published difficulty labels help so little in a live paper.
What that means practically is that the grade you need is personal. You are not asking whether this question is objectively hard. You are asking whether this question is hard for the version of you sitting in this chair with this much time left, and that is a question you can answer.
It also means the grading skill has to be built on your own paper, not on somebody else's difficulty rating. The signals below are general. The thresholds you set against them come from your own error log and your own chapter strength.
That is a small reframe with a large consequence. It means grading is trainable from your own data rather than learnable from a list, and it means two aspirants sitting the same paper should reasonably produce two different attempt orders.
Aspirants ask us which chapters are hard. It is the wrong question. The useful version is which chapters are hard for you at speed, which is answerable from four mocks and a spreadsheet, and it changes the attempt order far more than any general ranking would.
What Actually Makes a CAT Quant Question Hard
Four things drive difficulty, and only one of them is the mathematics. Separating them matters because three of the four are visible before you start solving.

The distinction between the four is what the triage is reading for. Two of them, concept depth and setup ambiguity, are reasons to leave a question. The other two are reasons to reorder it, which is a different decision with a different cost.
Note the split. Concept depth is genuine difficulty and worth respecting. Computation length is not difficulty at all, it is cost, and it is the driver aspirants most often misread as hardness. A long but clean question is a good attempt when you have time and a bad one when you do not.
The 10 Second Triage: 3 Reads
Three passes over the same question, in this order, without writing anything. The order matters because each read narrows what the next one has to check.
- The shape. How long is the stem, how many conditions, and which chapter is it?
- The numbers. Are they friendly, ugly, or absent altogether?
- The ask. What exactly is being requested, and is it the obvious quantity?
Grading Into Three Tiers
- Green. Familiar chapter, one clear setup, friendly numbers. Attempt on the first pass.
- Amber. Familiar chapter but long, or unfamiliar but clean. Attempt on the second pass if time allows.
- Red. Unfamiliar chapter with ambiguous setup, or a stem you cannot restate after reading it once. Leave it.
- Unknown. If you cannot grade it in ten seconds, it is amber by default. Do not spend twenty seconds deciding.
Read 1: The Shape of the Stem
The most useful and least intuitive signal is length. A four line stem with three stated conditions is usually easier than a one line stem, because information is what makes a question tractable. Short stems hide their work in the reader.
Count the conditions rather than the words. Each stated condition is a constraint that closes off possibilities, so three conditions on two unknowns is generous. One condition on two unknowns means the second constraint is implicit, and implicit constraints are where CAT hides its difficulty.
- Several explicit conditions: usually green, because the setup is handed to you.
- A one line stem with a general claim: often red, because the constraint is hidden in the wording.
- A stem naming a specific chapter object, such as a circle or an arithmetic progression: grade on your strength in that chapter.
- A stem with a condition you cannot convert into an equation on sight: amber at best.
Skipping long questions on sight. Aspirants who filter by stem length systematically skip the tractable questions and attempt the terse ones, then conclude the paper was hard. Length is a cost signal, not a difficulty signal, and the two point in opposite directions here.
Read 2: The Numbers
Numbers tell you which method the setter had in mind. Friendly values mean the arithmetic is meant to be done. Ugly values mean it is not, and that the intended route is structural.
Treat ugly numbers as a warning about length rather than about difficulty. A question with 17 and 23 in it will almost always resolve through a factor argument or a cancellation rather than through multiplication, and if you cannot see that route in ten seconds the question becomes long rather than impossible.
What Different Number Types Signal
- Round numbers. Computation is intended. Usually green if the chapter is familiar.
- Primes and awkward values. A structural method is intended. Amber unless you spot it immediately.
- No numbers at all. The question is about a relationship. Green if you are comfortable with variables, red if not.
- Very large numbers. Almost always a pattern or a remainder question, not a calculation.
- Numbers that are one away from a round value. An expansion or a difference of squares is intended.
If the options are far apart, the question is an estimation question whatever the stem says. Wide options are the setter telling you that approximation is enough, and recognising that in the triage converts several red questions into green ones without changing your mathematics at all.
Read 3: The Ask
The Four Asks That Cost Marks
- A composite of the unknowns rather than an unknown, such as x plus y or x times y.
- A count of solutions rather than the solutions, which changes the whole method.
- A difference or a change rather than a value, which needs both states computed.
- A different unit from the one the working produces, such as a percentage after a ratio.
The last read takes two seconds and prevents the most expensive error in the section: solving correctly and answering the wrong quantity. Read the final clause of the question before you read anything else in detail.
The asks that cost marks are the indirect ones. Not the value of x, but the value of x plus y. Not the number of solutions, but the sum of them. Not the area, but the difference in areas. Each of those adds a step after the mathematics is finished, and it is the step aspirants skip when they are relieved to be done.
- Read the final clause first, before the body of the stem.
- Write the asked quantity at the top of your rough work, in three words.
- Check the units, since a question asking for a percentage after computing a ratio is a common trap.
- Note whether the ask is TITA, because no negative marking changes the grade of a borderline question.
Three Worked Triages, Ten Seconds Each
Grades below are for an aspirant comfortable with algebra and weak in geometry, which is the point: the same three questions would grade differently for someone else.
- A five line stem, three conditions, an arithmetic progression, round numbers, asking for a term. Long shape, friendly numbers, direct ask. Green, attempt now.
- A one line stem about a circle inscribed in a triangle, no numbers, asking for a ratio. Terse shape, weak chapter, relational ask. Red, leave it.
- A three line stem with 17 and 23 in it, asking for the remainder. Ugly numbers means a structural route, and the chapter is comfortable. Amber, second pass.
Notice that none of the three required any mathematics. That is what makes the triage cheap enough to run on every question, and running it on every question is what turns it from a technique into an attempt order.
Take your last Quant sectional and grade every question you skipped, from the paper rather than from memory. If more than two of them were green, your problem is not solving speed. It is that you never graded them and attempted in the order they appeared.
Turning the Grade Into an Attempt Order
Why Order Beats Selection
Selection asks which questions to do. Order asks which to do first, and it is the better frame because it never throws a question away permanently. A red at minute five can become an amber at minute thirty when the greens are finished and the pressure has changed.
- Selection is a one way decision made under the least information you will have all section.
- Order is reversible, so a misgrade costs seconds rather than a question.
- Order also protects the TITA questions, which are free to guess and easy to forget.
A grade is only useful if it changes what you do next. The three pass structure below spends the first six minutes buying information and the rest spending it, and it holds whatever your strength profile looks like.
- Pass one, minutes 0 to 6. Grade all 22 questions and attempt only greens as you meet them.
- Pass two, minutes 6 to 30. Work the remaining greens, then ambers in ascending expected cost.
- Pass three, minutes 30 to 40. Ambers you can close, plus TITA reds where a guess costs nothing.

Practise grading on chapters you are weak in, not strong in. Grading a familiar chapter is easy and teaches nothing. Running the triage over Geometry and Mensuration questions when geometry is your weak section is where the skill actually forms.

How many questions should I attempt in CAT Quant?
There is no universal number, because it depends on your accuracy. A useful way to think about it is that attempts and accuracy trade against each other, and grading raises attempts without lowering accuracy, which is why it is worth training separately.
Does the triage work for DILR and VARC?
The idea transfers, the signals do not. DILR grades on structure and on how much the first two conditions fix. VARC grades on passage subject and question type. Build a separate signal list for each rather than reusing this one.
Is ten seconds per question not a waste of time?
Twenty two questions at ten seconds is under four minutes, and it buys you an ordering for the other thirty six. The comparison is not against zero seconds, it is against the four minutes a single misjudged red question takes.
What if I grade a question wrongly?
Expect it often at first. Log the misgrades by type, since the pattern is usually narrow: most aspirants systematically overrate long stems or underrate their weakest chapter. Two mocks of logging will name your bias.
