IBSAT 2026: Test Days, Deadlines and How It Differs

With CAT 2026 a month away, many aspirants are already asking a second question: what is my backup? IBSAT, the entrance test for the ICFAI Business Schools, is one common answer, and it usually runs in December, soon after CAT. It is also a test with a different format, a different rhythm and a different admission route.
This guide separates what the official IBSAT page states from what third-party sites report. It matters, because the dates floating around the internet do not all agree. You will see what is firm, what is still tentative, and how the test differs from CAT.
IBSAT is one option among several. Our comparison of CAT, XAT, NMAT and SNAP across four deciding factors helps you place it in your plan.
- The official IBSAT page says the test is conducted every December by IFHE, in a remote proctored online format.
- It has 140 questions in 120 minutes across four areas, with no negative marking and no sectional time limits, according to the official page.
- Exact test days and registration deadlines for 2026 are not on the official page we checked, and third-party sources disagree, so verify on the official website.
- One application covers the IBS campuses, which also accept CAT, XAT, NMAT or GMAT scores.
- CAT is on Sunday, 29 November 2026, is centre based and has sectional timing, so the two tests need different preparation.
What IBSAT Is
IBSAT stands for the ICFAI Business School Aptitude Test. It is conducted by the ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education, known as IFHE, and it is used for admission to the ICFAI Business Schools, which operate on several campuses. The official IBSAT page describes it as a test held every December.
It is a different kind of entrance from CAT. CAT scores feed into IIM admissions and a large number of other B-schools, and the IIMs run their own shortlists and interviews. IBSAT is the gateway to one group of schools, and the admission process that follows is run by that group.
Your reasons for considering it will differ. Some candidates treat it as a safety option. Others like its remote format. Others are drawn to a particular campus or programme. Whatever the reason, it helps to know its rules before you plan your December.
Copying a test date from a coaching site or a video and building your plan around it. Third-party pages often disagree with each other, and they may be out of date. Treat them as hints, and confirm everything on the official IBSAT website.
What the Official Page Says
The official IBSAT page for 2026 gives several firm details. The test is conducted every December by IFHE. It is a remote proctored online test, which means you take it from a location of your choice under online supervision, and not at a physical centre. There is no negative marking, and there are no sectional time limits.
The paper has 140 questions in 120 minutes. The official page lists four areas: Verbal Ability with 50 questions, Reading Comprehension with 30, Quantitative Aptitude with 30, and Data Analysis and Data Interpretation with 30. Structure can change between years, so check the current page before you rely on this split.
A single application is said to cover the nine IBS campuses. The schools also accept scores from CAT, XAT, NMAT or GMAT, so a candidate may apply through IBSAT or through one of those other tests, depending on the school's rules. Read the admissions page for the exact route.
| Item | What the official page lists |
|---|---|
| Conducting body | IFHE |
| Timing | Every December |
| Mode | Remote proctored online |
| Questions and time | 140 questions in 120 minutes |
| Marking | No negative marking |
| Sectional limits | None |
Notice what is missing from this table: the 2026 test days and the registration deadline. The official page did not list them when we checked on 28 October, so we do not state them as fact.
Test Days and Deadlines: What Is Unclear
Third-party sites give conflicting information. Some education portals list a set of test days spread across December, with two sessions a day. Others say the test falls in the last week of December, with registration closing around the third week. These cannot both be right.
Because the claims conflict, the sensible move is to avoid committing to any one of them. Write the official website address in your planner, and check it weekly from now. When the dates are published, you will see them there first. Treat any date you read elsewhere as unconfirmed until it matches the official page.
The same caution applies to the fee and the result. Third-party sources mention an application fee of around Rs 1,800 and a result in early January, but the amounts and dates can change, and they are not stated on the page we checked. Confirm both before you pay or plan around them.
Create a short checklist of the facts you need to confirm on the official site: registration window, test days, slot timings, fee and result. Check them off as they appear. One dated, confirmed source is worth more than five guesses.
How IBSAT Differs From CAT
The two tests ask for different habits. CAT is held at a test centre, has three sections of forty minutes each, and does not let you return to a section after time runs out. Marking is plus three for a correct MCQ and minus one for an incorrect one, with no negative marking on typed answers.
IBSAT, according to the official page, has no negative marking and no sectional time limits. That changes your strategy. With no penalty for a wrong answer, an unattempted question gives you nothing, and a guess costs nothing. With no sectional limit, you can move between areas freely, which rewards good time allocation across the whole paper.
That is a very different game from CAT, where the penalty makes selection and accuracy matter, and where the sectional clock forces you to finish each part in turn. Practising only for CAT does not fully prepare you for IBSAT, and the reverse is also true.
| Feature | CAT 2026 | IBSAT 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Date | Sunday, 29 November 2026 | December, days to be confirmed |
| Mode | Computer based at a test centre | Remote proctored online |
| Sections | Three, 40 minutes each | Four areas, no sectional time limit |
| Negative marking | Yes for MCQ, none for typed answers | None, per the official page |
| Used for | IIMs and many other B-schools | ICFAI Business Schools |
The exam day logistics also differ. For CAT, you travel to a centre and carry your admit card, and the official CAT website lists admit card download from Wednesday, 4 November. For IBSAT, you need a working device, a stable connection and a suitable room, and the official instructions will list the requirements.
Map Your December Options
Planning CAT, IBSAT and other tests together can get crowded. Share your plan for a focused read on how to sequence them.
Review My Exam PlanWho Should Consider IBSAT
IBSAT can make sense if you are interested in the ICFAI Business Schools specifically, if you want another attempt at a test in the same season, or if you prefer a remote format. It can also be a reasonable add-on if you have the time, because its format is different and its pressure is lower than CAT's.
It may make less sense if it costs you CAT preparation. If you are still working on weak areas for CAT, adding a second test in the last month can spread you thin. The better question is whether the extra option is worth the extra hours, given your current stage.
Compare the options before you decide. Our guides on SNAP 2026 dates, attempts and scoring, the NMAT 2026 exam window and the XAT 2027 date and pattern set the other choices side by side. You may find one of them fits your goals better.
The Should I Sit It Check
- Fit: do the ICFAI Business Schools match the programme and campus you want?
- Time: can you add a second test without weakening your CAT preparation?
- Setup: can you arrange a device, connection and quiet room for a remote test?
If you answer yes to all three, IBSAT is worth a place in your calendar. If one answer is no, solve that problem first or drop the test. A half-prepared second option rarely helps, and it can distract from the first one. Be honest about your time, since the weeks after CAT also hold applications and interview preparation.
It also helps to ask what a score would change. If you already hold or expect a CAT, XAT, NMAT or GMAT score that the schools accept, check whether IBSAT adds anything for you. The official admissions page is the place to read how each route is treated, because rules can differ by programme and campus.
- Confirm IBSAT dates, fee and registration on the official website, not from a forum.
- Keep your CAT plan intact, and add IBSAT practice only after the exam on 29 November.
- Rehearse an online remote setup before the test: device, connection and room.
Preparing for IBSAT After CAT
If you decide to sit IBSAT, plan the preparation around the gap between CAT and the December test days. Because the format is lighter on penalties and has no sectional limits, practise with a full paper in one sitting, moving between areas by choice.
Use your CAT preparation as a base. Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation are skills you will already have been building. What changes is pacing: you now decide how long each area deserves, and you attempt everything you can, since a wrong answer costs nothing under the official rule.
Also prepare the technical side. A remote proctored test depends on your device, your connection and your room. Do a trial run if the official site offers one, and read the rules about what is allowed in the room. Having a backup plan for a power or connection failure is sensible.
Keep the rest of your cycle in mind. Other applications, shortlists and interviews follow. A CAT study planner can hold your test days alongside application deadlines, and you can talk to a CAT mentor about which tests to prioritise.
Candidates who treat a second test as a sprint right after CAT often do better than those who study for it all month. The reason is focus: the month goes to CAT, and the short gap afterwards goes to adjusting the habits that change, mostly pacing and the online setup.
- Do you know which facts about IBSAT 2026 are confirmed and which are not?
- Have you noted the official website address in your planner?
- Do you understand how no negative marking changes your attempt strategy?
- Is your plan for the weeks after CAT written down?
