CUET PG English for TISS: What the Paper Actually Tests

An aspirant preparing for TISS opens a study plan built from the top search results. It tells them TISSNET carries thirty English questions worth thirty marks, about thirty percent of the paper, and lists the question types to drill. The plan is detailed, confident and describes an exam that has not been conducted since 2023.

TISS discontinued its own entrance test. Admission to its postgraduate programmes now runs through CUET-PG, with three management programmes admitting on CAT instead. That change alone would be enough to invalidate the plan. There is a second change underneath it that matters even more for anyone preparing English: CUET-PG removed its general section, and most TISS candidates now sit a paper with no English questions at all.

What Replaced TISSNET, and What That Means for English

TISS's own admissions material now routes candidates through CUET-PG. Its postgraduate programmes page states that admission to all its master's degree programmes is based on CUET-PG scores, with three exceptions in the management space which use CAT.

Registration runs in two separate steps, which catches people out. You register with NTA for CUET-PG and sit the exam, and then you complete a separate TISS registration once scores are released. Missing the second step after clearing the first is a real and avoidable failure.

TISS has also indicated the specific subject codes its applicants should take, spanning both general papers and domain papers. Which one you sit determines whether you will see a single English question, which is why the distinction matters more than any study technique in this article.

The Paper Code Decides Everything

CUET-PG papers fall into two broad shapes, and they make completely different demands.

Check 1: Which Exam Does Your Programme Use

Most TISS master's programmes run on CUET-PG. The management programmes in human resources and labour relations, organisation development, and hospital administration use CAT. Check 2: Domain Paper or General Paper

A domain paper is 75 questions of subject content. A general paper mixes language with reasoning, awareness and aptitude components. Your programme determines which you sit, and TISS publishes the acceptable codes rather than leaving it to inference.

Check 3: The Second Registration

The TISS application is separate from the CUET-PG registration and opens after results. In the completed 2026 cycle that window ran in May, well after the March exams and April results. Diarise it as its own deadline rather than assuming the exam registration covered you.

What the Language Component Actually Asks

For general paper candidates, the language questions run to a recognisable catalogue, though NTA does not publish a per-component question count.

• Reading comprehension, on passages with answers located fairly directly in the text.
• Grammar and usage errors, asked as direct identification questions.
• Sentence correction and improvement, choosing the better-formed version.
• Jumbled paragraphs and paragraph completion, the same logic as CAT para jumbles.
• Synonyms, antonyms and one word substitution, straightforward recall.

Why No Honest Source Gives You a Weightage

You will find pages stating that English carries a specific number of questions and marks in CUET-PG. Those figures come from the pre-2024 Part A structure and no longer describe the paper. NTA does not publish a component-level split for the general papers, so any precise weightage you are offered is either historical or invented. Prepare across the catalogue rather than optimising against a number nobody can verify.

What a Domain Paper Candidate Should Do Instead

If your code puts you on a domain paper, the useful question is not how to prepare English but where those hours should go instead, and the answer is more specific than simply studying your subject.

Seventy-five questions of pure subject content is a far narrower target than a mixed paper, which means depth beats breadth decisively. A domain paper can go further into a topic than a general paper ever would, because it has no other components competing for space.

That argues for working from your undergraduate syllabus outward rather than from a general awareness base inward. The questions assume you studied the discipline, and they are entitled to assume it.

It also changes what practice looks like. Comprehension practice still helps, because subject questions are still read under time and misreading a stem costs the same four marks as not knowing the answer. But it is now a secondary habit maintained alongside content revision, rather than a section you are preparing for in its own right.

Why This Keeps Happening to Entrance Exams

TISS is the second major entrance test to vanish in recent cycles, after IIFT moved its admissions onto CAT scores. The pattern is worth understanding, because it will very likely happen again.

Running a national entrance exam is expensive and administratively heavy. When a centralised alternative exists and is already being sat by the same candidate pool, the institutional logic for maintaining a separate test weakens considerably. CAT and CUET-PG have both absorbed exams this way.

For an aspirant the practical consequence is that the list of papers you are preparing for is less stable than it looks. A calendar built in June can contain an exam that no longer exists by December, and nothing will announce this to you: the aggregator pages will keep publishing patterns, and the study plans built from them will keep looking authoritative.

The defence is a habit rather than a piece of knowledge. Once a cycle, verify each paper in your calendar against the institute's own admissions page. It takes an hour and it is the cheapest insurance in the whole process.

How the Marking Scheme Changes Your Behaviour

CUET-PG runs 75 questions worth 300 marks in 90 minutes, with plus 4 for a correct answer, minus 1 for a wrong one, and nothing for an unattempted question.

That is 72 seconds per question, which is brisk but workable, and a four-to-one reward ratio that is considerably more forgiving than CAT's three-to-one. Eliminating two of four options makes an attempt clearly worth taking on expectation.

The combination pushes toward a high attempt rate. A candidate leaving fifteen questions blank out of caution is giving up more than the penalty would have cost them, and the 90 minute clock does not leave room to deliberate your way to certainty on every item anyway.

Building Preparation That Survives a Format Change

The broader lesson here outlasts TISS, because this is the second major entrance exam to disappear in as many years.

Check the Institute Before the Aggregator

An institute's own admissions page and prospectus are the only sources worth planning against. Aggregator pages carrying a current year in the heading are frequently last year's page with the date changed, and the heading is the first thing updated and the last thing verified.

Treat a Missing Notification as a Signal

When several pages confidently describe a pattern but none links an official notification with a date on it, that absence usually means something. As of now, CUET-PG dates for the next cycle have not been published, so any schedule you are shown for it is extrapolation.
