If XLRI or another XAT school is on your list, the application form is the first task, and the reported deadline is close to the CAT date. A form filled in a hurry in the last week is where avoidable mistakes happen: a wrong category, a blurred photo, a missed programme.

This checklist gives six steps in the order you should do them. The dates and fees below come from a third party report, published by Careers360 in July 2026. They are not from the official XAT website, which we could not open in this session, so confirm each one there before you act.

Between CAT preparation and the form, your calendar fills up quickly. A CAT study planner can hold the XAT dates beside your mocks, so neither gets squeezed.

Key Takeaways
  • Third party reporting says XAT 2027 registration runs from 15 July to 6 December 2026.
  • The exam is reported for Sunday, 3 January 2027, from 2 to 5 pm, with the admit card reported for 20 December.
  • The reported fee is Rs 2,300, plus Rs 200 for each XLRI programme you add.
  • The reported marking is plus 1 for correct, minus 0.25 for wrong, a further minus 0.10 for more than 8 consecutive unattempted, and none in the GK section.
  • Confirm all of it on the official XAT site, and file the form well before the last day.

What Is Reported and What You Must Confirm

The details in this article come from one third party source, a Careers360 article from 15 July 2026. It reports that registration for XAT 2027 opened on 15 July and closes on 6 December 2026, that the exam is on Sunday, 3 January 2027, and that the admit card is expected on 20 December.

We tried to open the official XAT website to cross check, and the session could not reach it. That is why every date here is labelled as reported. The safe habit is simple: open the official site, find the same date there, and use that one. If the two differ, the official site wins.

Also remember that deadlines can be extended, and fees and rules can change between cycles. Do not plan to use an extension. Plan to finish early.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility and Documents

Start with eligibility. Read the rules for graduation, final year candidates and any category conditions on the official site before you spend time on the form. If you are not sure whether your degree qualifies, ask the helpdesk early, since an answer takes time.

Then collect the documents. You will want your identity proof, academic records, category certificate if it applies, a recent photograph and a scanned signature, in the sizes the form asks for. Our guide on the three folder document system is a good way to keep them tidy.

Do this on a day when you are not rushed. A scan that is too large, or a photograph that does not meet the format, is the usual cause of a delay.

Step 2: Register and Secure Your Login

Registration needs a working email address and a mobile number. Use ones you control and check often, because the portal sends updates and the admit card notice to them. Do not use a shared family address that others may clear.

Choose a password you will remember and store it somewhere safe. Write down the registration number as soon as you get it. If the portal sends a confirmation message, save it.

It is also worth noting the time you registered. If something goes wrong later, a record of what you did and when makes the conversation with the helpdesk much easier.

Common Mistake

Using a temporary or shared email address for registration. When the admit card or a correction window notice goes to an inbox you do not check, the cost is not a missed email. It is a missed chance.

Step 3: Fill the Personal and Academic Sections Carefully

Fill your name exactly as it appears on your identity document. Enter your date of birth, category and academic marks from the records and not from memory. A small mismatch between the form and your documents can become a problem at the exam gate or the later admission stage.

For marks, use the format the form asks for, whether percentage or CGPA, and follow the conversion rule the portal states. If you are in the final year, check how the form wants the expected result entered.

Read each screen once more before you move to the next. Most forms let you save and return, so there is no reason to finish in one sitting. A fresh read the next morning catches errors that tiredness hides.

The Form Check

  1. Compare name, date of birth and category against your ID, one by one.
  2. Enter marks from the official record, and not from memory.
  3. Save the draft, close it, and re-read it the next day.
  4. Submit only after the second read.

Step 4: Choose Your Programmes and Understand the Fee

The reported fee is Rs 2,300 for the exam, plus Rs 200 for each XLRI programme you add. Confirm the amount on the official site, since fees change from cycle to cycle. Think about which programmes you actually want before you pay for them, and read what each one offers.

Make this decision from your profile and your goals, not from fear of missing out. A longer list costs more and also gives you more to prepare for later. Our guide to CAT, XAT, NMAT and SNAP explains how to weigh a test, and the same thinking works for choosing programmes.

Pay through the official portal only, keep the receipt, and note the payment reference. Never pay through a link that someone sends you in a message.

Step 5: Know the Pattern Before You Pay for a Slot in Your Calendar

Third party reporting describes the marking as plus 1 for every correct answer and minus 0.25 for every wrong answer. It also reports an extra deduction of 0.10 for each question beyond 8 consecutive unattempted questions, and no negative marking in the General Knowledge section. The exam is reported for 2 to 5 pm on 3 January 2027.

The unattempted rule matters for strategy. Leaving a long run of questions blank has a cost in this pattern, so you cannot treat blanks as free. We will not give you a number of questions to attempt. What this means is that your selection and your accuracy both matter, and your plan should be tested in mocks.

Note also the date. The exam falls five weeks after CAT. That gap is usable if you plan it. Our article on the 35 day plan between CAT and XAT shows how to spend it.

Exam Tip
  1. Take one mock in the XAT time window, 2 to 5 pm, once the date is confirmed.
  2. Practise decision making questions separately, since CAT does not have that section.
  3. Keep the GK section for the end of your practice, and do not let it eat your main preparation.

The Common Causes of Delay and Error

Most problems with the form are small and avoidable. A photograph that does not meet the size or format, a signature scan that is too light, a category certificate in the wrong file type, and a payment that went through but was not recorded. Each of these is easy to fix if you notice it on the day, and awkward to fix a week later.

The second group is timing. The portal can slow down near a deadline, since many candidates apply in the last days. A payment gateway can fail, or an OTP can arrive late. If you start on the final day, you have no room for any of it.

The third group is carelessness with choices. Applicants add programmes they do not want, or forget one they do. A short written list of your programmes, made before you open the form, prevents both.

A Three Week Schedule Before the Deadline

If the reported deadline of 6 December holds, count back three weeks. In the first week, check eligibility, gather documents and register. In the second week, fill the form, save it, and re-read it. In the third week, pay, submit, download the receipts, and check the confirmation.

That schedule finishes the form before the last week, which is also the last week before CAT on 29 November, where you want your attention on mocks and revision. Finishing early protects your CAT preparation as much as your application.

If you have already passed the first week of that schedule, do not panic. Compress it, but keep the order, and keep the second read. A form submitted a day later with a clean second read is better than one submitted in a rush with an error in the category.

Step 6: Submit, Download and Verify

Submit the form only after your second read. After you submit, download the confirmation and the fee receipt, and save both in the folder where your documents live. Check that the programmes you picked appear on the confirmation.

If the portal allows corrections, note the window. Do not assume there will be one. If you find an error after submission, write to the helpdesk the same day and keep the reply.

Then put the next dates in your calendar: the admit card date, the exam date, and any correction window. When the admit card is released, read it as carefully as you would the CAT card. Our guide to the XAT 2027 date, registration and pattern has more on the next steps.

Mentor Insight

Applicants who treat the form as an hour of admin often pay for it later. The ones who treat it as a small project, with a checklist, a second read and a saved receipt, rarely have a problem. It is the least glamorous part of the season, and it is entirely within your control.

Quick Check
  • Have you confirmed the deadline on the official XAT website?
  • Are your documents scanned in the right size?
  • Have you re-read the form on a second day?
  • Do you have the receipt saved?
